COMMERCE, Texas - No. 9 Midwestern State withstood a late Texas A&M-Commerce charge to survive the Lions 90-86 in Lone Star Conference crossover play here Thursday night.
The Mustangs improved their all-time best start to 14-0, while snapping the Texas A&M-Commerce's eight-game homecourt winning streak as the Lions dropped to 11-3.
"We lost a little bit of aggressiveness early in the second half," MSU coach
Grant McCasland said. "It got real physical and there were a lot of fouls called early. I thought the officials did a nice job of keeping order as it got a little physical."
The Mustangs led by as many as 17 points in the opening half and led 45-29 at intermission after
Anthony Moore banged in a 3-pointer
MSU pushed the advantage back out to 15 when
Craig Green hit the front end of a bonus to give the Mustangs a 58-43 with 13:27 to go.
That's when the Lions made their first push as Sammy Jackson ignited an 11-2 run with a 15-footer on the baseline as Texas A&M-Commerce clawed to within 60-54 when Brad Hambrick hit the first of his pair of 3-pointers from the right corner with 11:50 to play.
"The tale of our season is going to be how well we keep players off of the boards," McCasland said. "That's the reason why they were able to make a comeback."
The Mustangs responded with a 12-2 run of their own to push the advantage back to 72-56 when
Michael Godwin hit a pair of free throws with 9:26 to play.
Texas A&M-Commerce, however, wasn't done even after
Adrian Van Buren's put back with 8:50 to go gave MSU a seemingly commanding 76-58 lead with 8:50 remaining.
The Lions put together a quick 9-0 run down the stretch to pull within 88-84 on Brian Singleton's layup with 40.5 seconds to play, but that's as close as the Lions would get.
For the second-straight game, Midwestern placed six players in double digits as Green led the way with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting.
Senior guard
Chris Hagan produced a solid all-around game with 15 points, five rebounds and six assists while junior forward
Charlie Logan had his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
