Angelo State ends Mustangs winning streak, 84-76

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Angelo State controlled the battle on the glass to put an end to No. 7 Midwestern State's 14-game winning streak as the Rams rolled to an 84-76 win in its Lone Star Conference South Division opener Wednesday night at Junell Center.

The Mustangs, which fell to 14-1 on the season and 0-1 in the LSC South, play host to West Texas A&M next Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's contest which begins at 6.

"They set the tone by getting offensive rebounds and getting easy baskets," MSU coach Grant McCasland said. "They just whipped us on the glass."

The Rams (9-6, 1-0) outrebounded MSU by the tune of 45-30 which produced a 24-8 edge on second-chance points.

"They really spread us out and our guards were just trying not to foul," McCasland said. "You can't play the game like that. We need to get better."

Midwestern State struggled with foul difficulties throughout the game which aided the Rams in making a big push in the second half.

Angelo State used a 22-4 run after the Mustangs claimed their final lead of the contest on a Chris Hagan jumper which gave MSU a 48-44 lead with 18:27 remaining.

By the time Chris Ellis put back Derrick Webster's missed free throw with 11:46 remaining, the Rams led 61-52.

Angelo State would push the lead to as many as 12 points before the Mustangs narrowed the final margin under the 10-point barrier.

The Mustangs led by as many as 14 in the opening half when Adrian Van Buren hit his third 3-pointer before intermission to give MSU a 39-25 lead 5:33 before halftime.

"Scoob saved us in the first half," McCasland said. "He made us look like we had a better first half than we did. They got after us and were the tougher team tonight."

Van Buren scored each of his 13 points in the opening half, while senior forward Anthony Moore came on to lead the Mustangs with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Senior forward Charlie Logan added 11 points, seven rebounds and six steals, while senior guard Craig Green had 11.

Shavar Burch paced a group of five Rams in doubles figures with 16 points and six rebounds.

The loss ends NCAA Division II's third longest active regular season winning streak at 19 games.
