WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Dome Magic is alive.
And the Cameron Aggies can definitely vouch for it.
No. 10 Midwestern State got a team-high 20 points from reserve
Adrian Van Buren as the Mustangs survived Cameron 86-83 Saturday night in overtime at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The was the 17th-straight for MSU on its home floor as the Mustangs matched the second-best start in school history by improving to 11-0.
It didn't come easily.
Cameron turned the tables on the Mustangs in the second half as MSU led by as many as 48-40 when
Jason Ebie converted a fast-break layup with 15:48 to go.
The Aggies went on an extended 25-9 run to take an 8-point lead of their own after Milton Garner converted on a pair of free throws to give CU a 65-57 lead with 6:16 to go.
Garner poured in a game-high 25 points off of the bench to lead the Cameron effort.
MSU chipped away in the closing minutes as
Chris Hagan and
Craig Green sandwiched a pair of free throws around a
Michael Godwin lay up to pull the Mustangs within 69-68 with 2:35 to go before Garner managed to hit just one of two free throws.
The teams exchanged baskets before Green hit another two free throws to give the Mustangs a 74-72 lead with 21 seconds remaining.
Cameron's Kallan Glasgow had his layup attempt blocked by Green with 3 seconds to go, but he was able to get another shot on a the backboard which was tipped in by Garner to send the game into overtime knotted at 74-74.
That's when Van Buren asserted his will.
After the Aggies scored the first five points of the overtime period, the junior guard from Midland converted a steal by Green into a layup with 1:42 to go, then canned his fourth 3-pointer of the night 30 seconds later to tie the game at 81-81.
Van Buren then dug out his only steal of the game to set the Mustangs up at the charity stripe.
That's where senior forward
Anthony Moore hit each of his four free throws in the final 35 seconds of the extra period to clinch the victory.
Van Buren went 8-for-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from the arc to lead the Mustangs, while Hagan scored 19 points and dished out seven assists.
Rashad Austin (13 points, nine rebounds) and Green (13 points, eight rebounds) threatened double-doubles for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State can match its best start in program history with a win over Southwestern Oklahoma State Monday night at Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. or 25 minutes after the women's games which begins at 6.
