Abilene Christian eliminates Mustangs, 7-6

DURANT, Okla. - Kim Partin's cue shot off the end of the bat eluded Midwestern State shortstop Amanda Potysman glove with two outs in the bottom of the seventh allowing Abilene Christian to complete a six-run comeback and eliminate the Mustangs 7-6 Friday at the Lone Star Conference Championships at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex.

Midwestern State went 2-2 in the tournament and dropped to 35-27. The Mustangs will await selection to the NCAA Division II South Central Regionals to be held next week in San Angelo.

Abilene Christian (31-24) advances to play the loser of the winner's bracket final later this afternoon between Southeastern Oklahoma State and Angelo State.

The Mustangs built a 6-1 lead after scoring single runs in the first three innings before freshmen Kellie Sledge and Potysman hit back-to-back home runs to key a three-run fifth inning that gave the Mustangs a five-run lead.

But the Wildcats took advantage of MSU's lone error of the tournament in the bottom of the inning to match the three runs keyed by a Melissa Rodriguez two-run double to left field to cut the advantage to 6-4.

The Mustangs were unable to take advantage of a steady flow of base runners to put away the game as MSU stranded 12 runners and the Wildcats came back to make them pay.

After starter Ashley Kuchenski left after allowing a leadoff homer to Leisha Johnson in the top of the seventh, the Wildcats got to Midwestern ace Katie Petersen for two runs on three hits.

Shelby McElvain drew a walk to greet Petersen before Jessica Shiery smashed a single up the middle. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt before Jackie Gentile delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game at 6-6.

After a Jessica Johnson walk, Partin blooped a soft liner off of the end of her bat that Potysman was unable to reach. She attempted to get Johnson at second, but her throw was late allowing Shiery to score the winning run from third.

The runs were the first of the tournament off of Petersen, who had gone 17 innings without allowing a run.

She fell to 25-8 while allowing two runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning.

The Wildcats scored five runs - two earned - on seven hits against Kuchenski, who started pitched into the seventh inning. She fanned three and walked two.

Kim McDonald claimed the win for the Wildcats to improve to 16-14 after yielding three runs - one earned - on six hits while striking out three and walking four.

Kim White came on to pitch the fifth inning for ACU and allowed three runs on four hits.

Potysman, Lindsey Voigt and Maranda Bishop each had two hits as the Mustangs pounded out 10 hits.

Johnson and Shiery had two hits apiece for the Wildcats.
