Midwestern State crushes RiverHawks to clinch playoff berth, 12-3

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State blasted four home runs en route to a 12-3 run-rule of Northeastern State in Game 2 Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.

The win improved the Mustangs to 31-23 on the season and 12-12 in the Lone Star Conference North and, more importantly clinched a berth in the LSC postseason tournament which will be held May 1-3 in Durant, Okla.

MSU dusted Northeastern starter Jessica Johnson for nine runs on six hits in the decisive second inning that started with a Lauren Craig home run before the Mustangs added two more long balls in the frame.

Senior third baseman Kristen Stonecipher launched her seventh homer and second grand slam of the season and sophomore Tabitha Yannetti connected for her first career homer as senior Lindsey Voigt drove in a run on a single and Maranda Bishop and Jessica Rodriguez forced in runs with bases-loaded walks.

Senior starting pitcher Ashley Kuchenski added a three-run bomb in the fourth and earned her sixth win of the season in the circle where she allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one.

The RiverHawks rallied for three runs in the third keyed by a pair of run-scoring doubles by Melissa Simms and Brooke Simms, but it wasn't enough to extend the game past five innings.

Northeastern State fell to 22-21 on the season and 7-13 in the LSC North Division.

Kuchenski, who extended her career-long hitting streak to eight games, and Craig paced MSU's nine-hit attack with two hits each.

The Mustangs close out the regular season with a pair of twin bills on the road next week. They will travel to Abilene Christian on Tuesday before playing their finale agianst Angelo State next Saturday.
