WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Northeastern State's Aimee Bohannan's three-run home run in the third inning powered the RiverHawks to a 4-2 win over Midwestern State Saturday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The RiverHawks stayed alive in the chase for the fourth-and-final berth for the Lone Star Conference North Division in the league's postseason tournament in two weeks in Durant, Okla.
NSU, which improved to 22-20 on the season and 7-12 in division play, needs to finish with a win in Game at MSU, then sweep Southwestern Oklahoma State next week.
The Mustangs, who fell to 30-23 and 11-12, need a win in Game 2 against the RiverHawks or a loss by NSU in its series next week against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Northeastern got to MSU starter
Katie Petersen in the first when Petersen force a run in with a walk of Brooke Smith.
The RiverHawks then got back-to-back singles from Erica Holly and Brandy Kimberlin led off the second with back-to-back singles then came around to score on Bohannan's seventh homer of the season.
That would be all NSU would get off of Midwestern ace Petersen, who fell to 21-7 after allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking three.
The Mustangs clawed back to within two runs after
Maranda Bishop drove in two runs with a double to the left-field gap in the fifth inning.
NSU starter Lacee Craig claimed her second win over the Mustangs this week as she went the distance while yielding two runs on six hits. She fanned two and walked four.
Bishop paced MSU's six-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two RBI, while
Ashley Kuchenski extended her hitting streak to seven games by going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Lauren Rome led the Northeastern offensive by going 3-for-4.
