Voigt powers Mustangs to 8-3 win over Northeastern State in Game 1

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Lindsey Voigt came a homer away from the cycle as Midwestern State rolled to an 8-3 win over Northeastern State in Game 1 Tuesday afternoon at RiverHawks Park.

The win left the Mustangs one win away from clinching their fifth-straight trip to the Lone Star Conference postseason championship tournament which will be held May 1-3 in Durant, Okla.

Voigt led off the game with a bunt single to ignite a four-run first inning.

After Jessica Rodriguez drew a one-out walk from Northeastern State starter Jessica Johnson, NSU catcher Lauren Rome's errant pickoff throw to second allowed Voigt to advance to third before RiverHawks' center fielder winged a throw into the home dugout trying to get Voigt at third.

Voigt scored on the play, while Rodriguez advanced to second.

Kristen Stonecipher, who was returning after missing three games with a hand injury, walked before Tabitha Yannetti drilled a two-out, two run double to right-center to plate Rodriguez and Stonecipher and give MSU a 3-0 lead.

Alyson Reynolds followed with an RBI-single to left to score Yannetti, but Reynolds was gunned down after trying to advance to second base.

Midwestern State starter Katie Petersen, who improved to 21-6 after allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six and walking five, struggled with her control in the bottom of the first when she walked four of the first six batters she faced to force in a run.

Voigt doubled in the second inning to score Amanda Potysman, who had reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Kuchenski.

Voigt would come around to score on Maranda Bishop's run-scoring single to right to give the Mustangs a 6-1 lead going into the third.

Voigt was at it again in the third when she blasted a two-run triple to right field to push the MSU advantage to 8-1.

She would lead the Mustangs' nine-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Yannettie was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI.

Johnson took the loss for the RiverHawks to fall to 7-10 after allowing eight runs – all earned – on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Midwestern State improved to 30-21 on the season and 11-10 in the LSC North Division, while the RiverHawks dropped to 20-20 and 5-12.
