WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Katie Petersen won her eighth-straight decision and got plenty of support as Midwestern State crushed Southwestern Oklahoma State 10-1 in Game 1 Tuesday afternoon at Mustangs Park.
The sophomore right-hander pitched four scoreless innings while giving up five hits and striking out six to improve 9-2.
Petersen has allowed just two earned runs in her last 41 2/3 innings, but didn't need to be quite so frugal against the Bulldogs.
Senior right fielder
Ashley Kuchenski led a nine-hit MSU attack by going 2-for-2 with four RBI.
Kuchenski lined a 3-2 offering from Alex Zukerman into the left-field gap for a two-run double to give MSU a 2-0 lead in the second inning, then drilled a two-run single to center field in the third to put the Mustangs up 6-0.
Senior catcher
Lindsey Voigt stroked her fourth homer to lead off the third and finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while frosh shortstop
Amanda Potysman added a three-run homer in the fourth as MSU built a 10-0 lead going into the fifth inning.
Southwestern Oklahoma struck a run off of MSU reliever Brittany Tanner, who struck out two after spelling Petersen to begin the inning.
Midwestern State improved to 13-9 on the season and 2-1 in LSC North Division play, while the Bulldogs dropped to 6-7 and 1-2.
