DURANT, Okla. – West Texas A&M's Kaitlyn Witte's three-run home run in the eighth inning lifted the Lady Buffs to a 4-1 win over Midwestern State Saturday morning at the Lone Star Conference Crossover at the Multi-Sports Complex.
Witte's eight homer of the season spoiled a great outing by MSU starter
Ashley Kuchenski, who fell to 4-4 on the season.
Kuchenski struck out a season-high seven while allowing four runs – two earned – on six hits. The senior from Magnolia walked just one batter in eight innings of work.
Midwestern State rallied to tie the game after loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Kuchenski hesitated on
Jessica Rodriguez's fly ball to shallow right field, but WT's Audrey Wallace returned the ball to pitcher Shannon O'Dea allowing Kuchenski to score to knot the game at 1-1 with two outs.
Kristen Stonecipher the popped up to short to end the threat after Voigt and Bishop advanced to second and third on a wild pitch.
With the international tiebreaker in effect, West Texas A&M placed leadoff hitter Rachel Cavallero on second to begin the eighth inning.
Amber Farr then reached on an error by MSU shortstop
Amanda Potysman before Witte drilled the game-winning homer to left field.
O'Dea improved to 8-9 after allowing one unearned run on six hits in eight innings. She stuck out six and walked four.
Midwestern State fell to 23-15, while the Lady Buffs improved to 18-21.
The Mustangs continue LSC Crossover play this afternoon with games against Eastern New Mexico at 4:30 p.m. and Texas Woman's University at 6:30 p.m.
