Mustangs battle Texas Woman’s Wednesday in Denton

What's going on: Midwestern State travels to Texas Woman's University for a Lone Star Conference South Division contest Wednesday night at Kitty Magee Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

What's at stake: The Mustangs are currently one game out of second place in the Lone Star Conference's South Division, but are also one game out of the fourth and final spot in the LSC Postseason Championship Tournament as Angelo State, Tarleton State and Abilene Christian are all 4-2 in divisional play. MSU is currently 3-3 in South Division contests.

Texas Woman's can move into a tie for fifth place with the Mustangs with a win on Wednesday.

For the record: Midwestern State has alternated losses with wins in each of the last six contests since the start of LSC South Division play. The Mustangs (9-10, 3-3) clinched their eight straight winning season at home with Saturday night's 70-54 win over Eastern New Mexico and are now 7-3 at home. MSU has not had the same success away from Ligon Coliseum as it has posted a 2-7 mark.

Texas Woman's (7-12, 2-4) had its modest two-game winning streak snapped by West Texas A&M 74-56 Saturday afternoon in Canyon. The Pioneers are 2-5 on their home floor this season, but snapped a five-game home-court skid in their last contest in Denton – a 75-64 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Jan. 26.

Who's hot: Junior forward Tiffany Cook has led the Mustangs in scoring in each of the last two games while averaging 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. Cook notched her second double-double of the season in last Wednesday's 70-47 setback at Angelo State when she scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. She followed that effort with a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds in Saturday's 70-54 win over Eastern New Mexico. Cook had scored in double figures just twice before her recent scoring binge. She scored a career high 28 points against Texas-Permian Basin on Dec. 17 and 10 against Central Oklahoma on Jan. 5.

Texas Woman's is led by junior transfer Renee Renz, who is coming off of her fifth double-double of the season as she scored 22 points and pulled in 12 rebounds in Saturday's 74-56 loss at West Texas A&M. Renz has notched at least 11 points in 18 of TWU's 19 contests. But, interestingly, the Pioneers are 1-8 when the 6-foot forward leads them in scoring and 6-4 when someone else does. Renz is a transfer from Division I Arkansas-Little Rock where she started 58 of the Trojans' 59 games in her two seasons there.

The series: Midwestern State leads the all-time series 27-15 and has seen a lot of success on the Pioneers' home floor. The Mustangs have compiled a 14-4 mark in games played against Texas Woman's in Denton since the start of the 1978-79 season and are 6-3 against the Pioneers at Magee Arena, which opened in the fall of 1997.
