SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 17 Midwestern State had the look of a team trying to shake off the rust in Friday afternoon's opener at the St. Mary's Division II Intercollegiate Classic.
The Mustangs committed three errors and returning All-South Central Region pitcher
Katie Petersen walked in the tying and winning runs to allow Incarnate Word to come away with a 5-4 win at the San Antonio ISD Triplex.
"We definitely had a lot of first-game jitters," MSU coach
Brady Tigert said. "We played O.K., but needed to work those out."
Junior first baseman
Jessica Rodriguez drilled an RBI-single up the middle and freshman
Amanda Potysman added a sacrifice fly to stake Mustangs' starter
Ashley Kuchenski to a 2-0 first inning lead.
Kuchenski kept the Cardinals at bay in her four inning of work allowing an unearned run on two hits while striking out one and walking one.
But Incarnate Word's Ashley Hinojosa connected for a two-run homer to left field off of Petersen in the fifth inning to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.
Midwestern State tied the game in the sixth on Potysman's first collegiate home run before surging back ahead with an unearned run in the top of the seventh.
Petersen struggled with her command in the bottom of the inning and issued four walks including an intentional pass to Hinojosa as the sophomore from Plano fell to 0-1.
Potysman paced the MSU attack by going 1-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs.
