Sepken named LSC Singles Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year; Gyorgy is Freshman of the Year

Berend named to LSC All-Academic Team

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State graduate student Selin Sepken was named the Lone Star Conference Women's Tennis Singles Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, while Emilia Gyorgy is the LSC Freshman of the Year.

Sophomore Camila Garcia joined Sepken on the All-LSC first team in singles, while Gyorgy was named to the All-LSC second team in singles. 

Garcia and Jasmine Crain were selected to All-LSC second team in doubles along with the pairing of Sepken and Gyorgy, who are No. 10 in the ITA rankings. Hattie Berend and Alessia Dolce received honorable mention in doubles. 

Berend was also named to the LSC All-Academic Team, which recognizes student-athlete accomplishments in the classroom and in their sport. To be eligible for the All-Academic Team ballot, individuals must maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average and have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

Gyorgy was one of 11 players in the LSC named to the Sportsmanship Team.

The awards are determined by a vote of the league's 11 head coaches.

Sepken, who is from Turkey, transferred to Midwestern State from Idaho and played No. 1 singles throughout the campaign. Sepken is 9-1 in conference duals with a 17-2 overall record this season. She has a four-match winning streak and is No. 8 in the ITA singles rankings entering the postseason.

Garcia has reeled off 12 consecutive victories in singles and has a posted an unblemished record in nine matches against conference opponents. The sophomore from Colombia has played primarily No. 3 singles for the Mustangs.

Gyorgy won 13 of her last 15 singles matches for the Mustangs, playing primarily the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The freshman from Hungary was 16-6 in the regular season with an 8-2 record in conference play, and she is No. 60 in the latest ITA singles rankings.

Sepken and Gyorgy have a seven-match winning streak in doubles and are 16-6 this season, including a 7-3 mark in LSC duals. They are No. 10 in the latest ITA doubles rankings.

Garcia and Crain have been a formidable duo this spring, posting a 19-3 record overall, and the pairing won five of seven matches since taking over the No. 1 position. Garcia and Crain won seven of 10 doubles matches in the LSC this season.

Berend and Dolce won their first nine matches together at No. 3 doubles and finished the regular season with an 11-2 record, including seven wins in LSC duals.

Midwestern State is the No. 2 seed in the LSC Women's Tennis Championship and awaits the winner of the quarterfinal match between Lubbock Christian and Cameron. The No. 34-ranked Mustangs take the court for the semifinals at 9 a.m. on Friday.
