Mustangs post routine win over Sul Ross State in home finale

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State closed out its home schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 win over Sul Ross State and departed for San Antonio to play St. Mary's in the season finale on Sunday at Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex.

Midwestern State (12-6, 4-3) enjoyed a stress-free dual on the day it honored four seniors: Juan David Duque, Matthew Earle, Jose Marquez and Germano Setti. Sul Ross State was no match for the No. 24-ranked Mustangs, and the Lobos season ended with an 0-12 record, losing all eight of its conference duals.

Setti and Earle began Senior Day with a 6-0 win over Joshua Hernandez and Diego Flamenco at No. 2 doubles. The duo needed just 13 minutes to improve to 14-2 this spring with a 5-1 record against conference foes.

Duque and Bruno Sanchez completed a 6-1 win over Jesus Duque and Gavin Leon just four minutes later, securing the doubles point for MSU. The Mustangs' pairing, which has a six-match winning streak, improved its conference record to 6-1 and is 9-5 this season.

Sul Ross State did not field a team at No. 3 doubles, so Jack Franklin and Marquez won in a walkover.

Rowan Olsen was also the beneficiary of a walkover at No. 6 singles.

In the five singles matches that were played, MSU did not drop a game.

Sanchez handled Hernandez at No. 2 singles in 33 minutes, 6-0, 6-0. The junior from Spain is 6-1 against LSC opponents and 12-5 overall this season.

Setti, ranked No. 17 in singles, took his time dismantling Duque at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0. The victory came in 39 minutes, and the Brazilian improved to 12-4 overall with a 5-2 record in the LSC.

Duque cruised to his eighth win in 10 singles matches with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Leon at No. 3 singles. Duque is 11-6 this season with a 4-2 record in conference play.

Marquez easily defeated Flamenco 6-0, 6-0 for his eighth win in his last 11 singles matches, and the senior from Oaxaca, Mexico, is 12-6 overall this season with a 7-3 record at No. 4 singles. Marquez is 5-2 against LSC competition.

Matthew Earle closed out the dual with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tim Kovacs at No. 5 singles. Earle is 2-2 in singles matches against conference foes and 5-6 overall this season.

Midwestern State makes the trek to San Antonio to play its dual match with St. Mary's — which was rained out last week. First serve at Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
