SAN ANTONIO – Midwestern State closed out its regular season with a 4-0 sweep at St. Mary's as the two teams played a dual match at Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon. The dual was originally scheduled to be played last week but was rained out.
Midwestern State (13-6, 5-3) is the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Lone Star Conference Men's Tennis Championship, which gets underway at Arlington Tennis Center on Thursday. The Mustangs will be in a rematch with the Rattlers in the quarterfinals. No. 1 seed Lubbock Christian meets the winner on Friday in the semifinals.
Tomas Leguizamon clinched the victory for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Aaron Ben Anton at No. 6 singles. The freshman from Colombia improved to 4-2 in conference matches and is 6-5 overall this season.
Bruno Sanchez followed a 6-0 victory alongside Juan David Duque at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Ollie Eriksson, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. The junior from Spain closes out the regular season with a four-match winning streak and a 7-1 record against LSC opponents.
Sanchez and Duque have a seven-match winning streak in doubles and improved to 10-5 for the season with a 7-1 conference record after defeating Louis Hein and Fabian Rosales.
Matthew Earle and Germano Setti clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 triumph over Eriksson and Victor Velter at No. 2 doubles. Earle and Setti are 15-2 this season with a 6-1 mark against LSC foes.
Setti, Duque and Cesar Llamas did not complete singles matches once the Mustangs clinched the dual-match victory.
Jack Frankilin and Jose Marquez posted a 7-5 victory in doubles, defeating Lincoln Baldonado Nikita Gavrilonoks. Franklin and Marquez improved to 3-2 at No. 3 doubles, all in LSC competition.
Marquez was the first singles player off the court after a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Florian Smalto at No. 4 singles. Marquez has a three-match winning streak and is 6-2 in conference with a 13-6 record overall in singles.
The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 3-4 record in away duals, and they were 6-1 at home with a 4-1 record at neutral sites.
