MSU displays more horse power in 6-1 win over WNMU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State rebounded from back-to-back losses on the road at UT Tyler and Cameron by whipping Western New Mexico, 6-1, at MSU Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

The Mustangs are 5-1 at home this season with an 11-6 mark overall and a 3-3 record against conference opponents.

Midwestern State took the doubles point for the 10th time this season, winning all three sets.

Jose Marquez and Jack Franklin coasted to their second win in four matches at No. 3 doubles, defeating Djamel-Dine Bey and Christoph Lund-Kuhl, 6-2.

Germano Setti and Cesar Loeches Llamas were paired at No. 2 doubles and prevailed 6-4 over Benjamin Vriends and David Guta.

Setti is 14-2 in doubles after playing his first 15 matches with Matthew Earle, who did not play on Friday.

Loeches Llamas lost his last two doubles matches and was playing with his third partner this season but improved to 6-8 for the campaign.

Bruno Sanchez and Juan David Duque, ranked No. 11 in doubles, won their fifth consecutive doubles match, defeating Yannik Rogulski and Jack Semper, 6-2. Sanchez and Duque improved to 8-5 at No. 1 doubles for the Mustangs.

Setti, ranked No. 17 in singles, coasted to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Semper and improved his record at No. 1 singles to 11-4. The senior from Brazil is 4-2 in conference confrontations.

Marquez breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lund-Kuhl for his seventh win in his last 10 singles matches, and the senior from Oaxaca, Mexico, is 11-6 overall this season with a 6-3 record at No. 4 singles.

Sanchez was pressed into a second-set tiebreak but beat Vriends 6-1, 7-6 (3) at No. 2 singles. The junior from Spain is 5-1 against LSC opponents and 11-5 overall this season.

After dropping the first set 2-6, Duque dominated the final two sets 6-0, 6-2 and defeated Rogulski at No. 3 singles. Duque won seven of his last nine singles matches and is 10-6 this season with a 3-2 record in conference play.

Loeches Llamas handled Guta at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2, for his third straight singles victory, all against conference opponents, and improved to 4-3 overall this season.

Bey earned the only point for the Western Mustangs by defeating Rowan Olsen in a match tiebreak at No. 6 singles, 2-6, 6-4, (10-6). Olsen's only other appearance this season was a straight-set victory at UT Dallas two weeks ago.

Midwestern State is back at MSU Tennis Center on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. for a dual with Sul Ross State before making a return trip to San Antonio to play St. Mary's after their dual was rained out last week.
