ROCKWALL, Texas – Midwestern State was eliminated in the semifinals of medal match play as top-seeded UT Tyler prevailed 4-1 in the Lone Star Conference Championship at Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club on Wednesday.
The Mustangs reached the semifinals by finishing fourth in the 54-hole stroke play event, but MSU drew the No. 1 seed for the head-to-head competition.
Seth Bearden earned the only point for Midwestern State as he defeated Preston DeSerrano in Match 5 at the 7,320-yard course along the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard. Bearden carded an impressive 2-under 70, while DeSerrano shot 3-over 75 with two birdies on the front nine. Bearden closed the round with eight consecutive pars after starting the back nine with his third birdie of the round.
Nathan Nelson fell behind Preston Chabaud by three strokes through the first nine holes and pulled within one stroke with his only birdie of the round on No. 18 following six consecutive pars, but Chabaud secured the victory with a par on the 540-yard, par 5.
Anniston McIlwain took a one-stroke lead on the first hole but trailed by three strokes after four holes in his match against Corbin Murray, who finished 1-over and defeated the sophomore from Bulverde, Texas, by six strokes.
Blake Harwell of the Patriots established a two-stroke advantage at the third hole and never relinquished the lead on his was to an eight-stroke win over Ryan Griff, who finished with a 6-over 78.
Chase Kisver had 16 pars and on birdie in his match with Jacob Holloway, who carded five birdies for UT Tyler and shot 2-under 70 to defeat Kisver by four strokes.
The Patriots advanced to the final to face Cameron, which eliminated West Texas A&M with a 3.5 – 1.5 victory in the semifinals.
