Mustangs reach semifinal with fourth-place finish in stroke play at LSC Championship

ROCKWALL, Texas -- Midwestern State reached the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Championship after finishing fourth in the 54-hole stroke play event. The Mustangs meet UT Tyler in medal match play on Wednesday at Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club.

Senior Seth Bearden finished fourth on the individual leaderboard, three strokes behind David Vega Gerstel of West Texas A&M and Issac Molloy of Cameron, who finished 1-over through 54 holes. Gerstel was the individual medalist after winning a playoff.

Bearden led the Mustangs, who shot 35-over 899 as a team and were nine strokes behind first-place UT Tyler. Cameron finished second at 30-over and will meet third-place finisher West Texas A&M in the semifinals. The Buffaloes were 33-over through 54 holes.

The Mustangs shot 9-over 297 in the third round on Tuesday and edged St. Mary's by two strokes to qualify for the playoffs.

Bearden shot 3-over 75 in the final round and was 4-over for the three rounds. Bearden had nine birdies in the three rounds combined, including five in a bogey-free second round, when he shot 5-under 67 on Monday afternoon.

Aniston McIlwaine shot even-par 72 in each of the last two rounds and finished in 10th place at 7-over 223. McIlwain had six birdies and an eagle in the three rounds at the 7,320-yard course.

Nathan Nelson had seven birdies during stroke play and finished in 13th place at 10-over. Nelson shot 6-over 78 in the final round. His only birdie on Tuesday came at the par-5, 540-yard 18th hole.

Midwestern State led the field with a score of 16-under on the Par 5s, which was 12 strokes better than any team in the field. The Mustangs had the second-most birdies among the 12 teams with 39 — three fewer than Cameron.

Ryan Griff had nine birdies for MSU and improved his scores as the tournament progressed. Griff shot 12-over in the first round but finished 5-over in the second round. In the third round, Griff shot 2-over 74 and finished in 45th place.

Chase Kisver played the final two rounds as a substitute for the Mustangs and finished at 6-over through 36 holes.

The Mustangs begin medal match play on Wednesday morning — and with a victory over UT Tyler — MSU plays for the conference championship on Wednesday afternoon.
