DUNCAN, Okla. - - Midwestern State is tied with St. Mary's for fourth place at 10-under 566 and is one of 10 schools in red numbers after two rounds of the 54-hole Hrnciar Invitational were played on Monday at The Territory Golf and Country Club.
Pittsburg State has a four-stroke lead atop the team leaderboard after 36 holes. The Gorillas shot 18-under 558 on the first day of the tournament, which features 15 teams from 13 schools. Pittsburg State is followed by four Lone Star Conference schools on the team leaderboard.
UT Permian Basin is in second place at 14-under 562, and Dallas Baptist is in third place at 11-under 565 entering the final round on Tuesday morning.
Tyler Hardtarfer of Pittsburg State shot 4-under 68 in both rounds on Monday and has a two-stroke lead over Dian Wilmot of UT Permian Basin and Nicholas Lewis of Weatherford atop the individual leaderboard. David Hobart of Pittsburgh State, Ioan Rowe of UT Permian Basin and Sam Dossey of Dallas Baptist are tied for fourth place at 5-under 139.
Anniston McIlwain is in a six-way tie for seventhth place entering the final round on Tuesday. The junior from Bulverde, Texas, had five birdies in his opening round, starting the day with a 4-under 68. His only bogey in the first round came at the 434-yard, par-4 18th hole. He birdied No. 18 his second time around the course on his way to an even-par 72. McIlwain birdied the 514-yard, par-5 seventh hole twice on Monday and finished with nine birdies through two rounds.
Ryan Griff shot a bogey-free 3-under 72 in the second round and is in a five-way tie for 13th place at 3-under 141 through the first 36 holes. Griff had four birdies in his opening round as he finished the morning session at even-par. In the second round, Griff carded seven consecutive pars to start his round before he birdied the 155-yard, par-3 eighth hole. He birdied two of the par-4s on the back nine in the afternoon session, including the 421-yard 12th hole, which he bogeyed the first time around the course.
Carter Ray had four birdies in the morning session and shot 1-under 71. He birdied two par-3s and two par-5s in his first round. The junior from Walters, Oklahoma, strung together three consecutive birdies followed by back-to-back pars to finish his day as he shot even-par in the second round. Ray is in a four-way tie for 28th place.
Jaxon Donaldson and Collin Moody are tied for 32nd place at even-par 144 after two rounds.
Donaldson had back-to-back birdies on No. 15 and No. 16 on his way to a 2-over 74 in the first round. The junior from Wimberley, Texas, birdied the 542-yard, par-5 15th hole for the second time in the afternoon session and closed his day with his third birdie of the round at the 566-yard, par-5 second hole. Donaldson shot 2-under 70 in the second round.
Moody had four birdies in each round on Monday, but the only hole he birdied twice was No. 15. The sophomore from Bridgeport, Texas, shot 1-over 73 in the first round and 1-under 71 in the second round.
Midwestern State had the best score of any team in the tournament on the four par-5s, finishing the first two rounds at 14-under, which was two strokes better than the hosts from Cameron. MSU was one of four schools to card 36 birdies, second most behind Weatherford, which had 38 birdies on the first day of action. The Mustangs had the third-most pars through 36 holes with 117. Only Garden City with 123 and Pittsburg State with 118 had more pars.
The Midwestern State 'B' Team shot 6-over 588 in both rounds on Monday and is in 12th place entering the third round.
Bryce Hoech was 1-over 145 through two rounds to lead the 'B' team and is tied for 38th on the individual leaderboard. Hoech birdied the 320-yard, par-4Â 16th hole twice and finished with seven birdies through 36 holes.
Chase Kisver had the best round among the 'B' team players with a 1-under 71 in the second round. Kisver is tied for 50th at 3-over 147.
Hank Germany eagled No. 16 during his first round and finished the day with five birdies through two rounds. Germany is tied for 58th at 4-over 148.
Nathan Nelson birdied No. 15 twice on Monday and had a total of four birdies — three in the second round — and is tied for 62nd at 5-over 149.
Ben Jones birdied his first hole of the day, the 120-yard, par-3 17th hole, and finished with six birdies through 36 holes. Jones is tied for 74th at 10-over 154.
The final round tees off Tuesday morning at the Randy Heckenkemper designed course, which has a course rating of 75.7 and a slope rating of 135.
