WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Germano Setti edged Jamie Paquet at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9), and by the narrowest of margins, Midwestern State pulled out a 4-3 victory over visiting Hawaii Hilo at MSU Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Setti, ranked No. 10 in the nation, clinched the victory at the same time Iori Furuhata slipped past
Matthew Earle at No. 5 singles, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-4.
Setti won a baseline battle that had Paquet cramping at the end of the match. The senior from Brazil improved to 7-2 for the season, and he is 5-2 in three-set matches this spring.
Earle, who held a 4-1 lead in the final set against Furuhata, fell to 3-3 at No. 5 singles this season.
Tomas Leguizamon earned a critical point for the 20th-ranked Mustangs as he prevailed in a three-setter at No. 6 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, giving MSU a 3-2 lead in the dual match. The freshman from Colombia improved his record to 2-3 for the Mustangs.
Angel Fonseca Garcia pulled the Vulcans even in the dual with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2, victory over
Jose Marquez at No. 3 singles. Marquez saw a four-match winning streak end and fell to 7-4 for the season.
Midwestern State had established an early 2-0 lead in the dual match after
Juan David Duque marched past Filippo Di Perna at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Duque is 5-1 at No. 4 singles and has a four-match winning streak without dropping a set.
Max Solano Fons got Hawaii Hilo on the scoreboard with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph over
Bruno Sanchez at No. 2 singles. Sanchez has alternated wins and losses at No. 2 singles over the last six dual matches and is 6-4 this season with a 4-4 record at Line 2.
Sanchez and
Cesar Loeches Llamas put the first point on the board for Midwestern State by defeating Jaden Williams and Fonseca Garcia, 6-3. Sanchez and Loeches Llamas improved to 3-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Setti and Earle put the Mustangs in position to win the doubles point with a 6-2 triumph over David Krnavek and Sergi Tintore. It was the eighth consecutive victory for Setti and Earle at No. 2 doubles and improved their season record to 9-1.
Midwestern State improved to 3-0 at home this season but will not be back at MSU Tennis Center until April 3 to play Lubbock Christian in the conference opener. The Mustangs visit Tyler Junior College on March 25 for a dual match that begins at 2 p.m.
