Frosty conditions shorten Oak Tree Invitational, Midwestern State tied for third after first round

EDMOND, Okla. – No. 25 ranked Midwestern State is tied for third place at the Oak Tree Invitational, which has been shortened to a 36-hole event because of frigid conditions during the morning hours on Monday.  The Mustangs and Lubbock Christian are both 19-over 299 through the first round at Oak Tree Country Club. 

Seven of the top-eight teams on the leaderboard are from the Lone Star Conference, including West Texas A&M, which is leading the 17-team field at 7-over 287. 

Oklahoma Christian, which is hosting the tournament, sits in second place at 18-over 298 with its "B" team. Cameron is fifth at 20-over 300. UT Permian Basin is tied for sixth place with Harding at 21-over 301. UT Tyler is in eighth place at 22-over 302.

Nathan Nelson had four birdies and finished the first round in a four-way for seventh place on the individual leaderboard at 2-over 72. The sophomore from Gunter, Texas, is just three strokes behind the leader, Will Tate of UT Permian Basin.

No. 25-ranked Seth Bearden, who won the individual title last year, is in a four-way tie for 17th place at 4-over 74. Bearden, who finished the event at 1-under 209 last year, birdied the 562-yard, par-5 12th hole, and the 207-yard, par-3 17th hole during his round on Monday. The senior from Crowell, Texas, carded a double bogey at the 560-yard, par-5 fourth hole. 

Ryan Griff is one of 14 players in 30th place at 6-over 76. Griff also birdied No. 12 as well as two par-4s at the 7,102-yard course. Griff had two double bogeys during his opening round.

Anniston McIlwain shot 7-over 77 in the opening round and is one of 11 players tied for 44th place. The sophomore transfer from Delta State had one birdie and one double bogey on his scorecard for the first 18 holes.

Chase Kisver, a junior transfer from Arkansas-Monticello, who last competed as an individual in the Ryan Palmer Foundation, made his first appearance in the lineup for the Mustangs and is in a 15-way tie for 55th place at 8-over 78. Kisver had one birdie on the front nine and added another birdie on the back nine.

The second round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. but could be delayed due to frost on Tuesday morning.
