Mustangs hope to prosper as they host Vulcans

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 12-ranked Midwestern State looks to extend its winning streak as it hosts Hawaii Hilo at MSU Tennis Center on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. The Mustangs, who have reeled off three consecutive victories, will be playing their fifth dual match in seven days.

Midwestern State improved to 7-4 with a 6-1 victory over Hillsdale on Monday afternoon as Hattie Berend, a sophomore from Wichita Falls, clinched for the Mustangs with 6-3, 6-4 win over Emma Palus at No. 6 singles.

Berend and Alessia Dolce improved to 4-0 in doubles and secured the first point of the day with a 6-3 win over Dimitra Papastarvrou and Esther Sura at No. 3 doubles. 

Camila Garcia and Jasmine Crain maintained their spotless record in doubles with a 6-1 victory over Isabella Spinazze Julia Zlateva at No. 2 doubles. Garcia and Crain improved to 11-0, and opponents have only won more than three games on three occasions. The duo only lost nine games over the last four duals, played in a span of five days.

Garcia improved to 9-1 at No. 3 singles and won her third straight match with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Papastarvrou.

No. 3-ranked Selin Sepken improved her record at No. 1 singles to 7-1 and got a measure of revenge for a loss in doubles by routing Briana Rees, 6-2, 6-1. Sepken and Emilia Gyorgy were defeated 6-3 at No. 1 doubles by Ane Dannhauser and Rees.

Gyorgy knocked off No. 33-ranked Dannhauser at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 0-6, 6-1, for her fourth straight singles victory. The freshman from Hungary improved to 7-4 this season.

Dolce played her first two tiebreak sets of the season and defeated Julia Zlateveva at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5). The sophomore from Italy improved to 5-4 with her second straight win in singles.

Crain had a three-match winning streak in singles snapped and fell to 2-2 at No. 5 singles after dropping a tightly contested match with Esther Sura, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5.

The Mustangs are 3-0 at home this season and will play their final dual match before beginning conference play on March 27 at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Midwestern State is facing the Vulcans for the fourth time in the history of the program, but all three previous encounters have been at neutral sites. The Mustangs improved to 3-0 in the all-time series with a 4-2 victory at Biola Tennis Center in La Mirada, California, three years ago. 

Hawaii Hilo plays Cameron before meeting MSU on Wednesday. The Vulcans are playing three consecutive opponents from the Lone Star Conference as they visit UT Tyler on Friday before facing Tyler Junior College on Saturday to complete their road trip.  

Hawaii Hilo began its journey through this region with a 2-5 overall record after being swept by No. 14-ranked Azusa Pacific completing a three-day swing in California. The Vulcans defeated Westmont, 7-0, before suffering a 5-2 loss to No. 44-ranked Menlo Oaks.

Freshman Johanna Roggenkamp from Germany is 4-3 at No. 1 singles for the Vulcans, who are 19-23 in singles matches this season. 

Sophomore Pia Starnecker of Germany is 3-1 at No. 4 singles but lost her last match to No. 51-ranked Karola Suviste of Azusa Pacifc, 2-6, 4-6, at No. 3 singles, where she is 1-2 this season.       
 
Sophomore Victoria Ricaurte-Cabas from Edmond, Oklahoma, haad a three-match winning streak halted with a 4-6, 1-6 loss Melis Mert of Azusa Pacific at No. 5 singles, dropping her singles record to 4-3 this season.

The Vulcans won the doubles point in three of their first seven dual matches this year and have a 10-9 record in doubles.

Marie Cordonnier and Mila Srebro are 2-3 at No. 1 doubles this season. Ricaurte-Cabas and Anna Takashi have posted a 4-3 record at No. 2 doubles, while Kaiya Ideta and Lejua Jordan are 4-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Hawaii Hilo of the PacWest Conference is led by head coach Guilherme De Medeiros of Brazil, who played collegiate tennis at Lewis-Clark State College, Hawaii Pacific and Long Island University.  De Medeiros was a 2019 NCAA Division II Championship Semifinalist after winning the PacWest Conference Championship.
Following a hectic schedule, the Mustangs have nine days before facing the Javelinas in Kingsville, and MSU visits Angelo State the following day on March 28. The ladies return home on April 3 to tangle with Lubbock Christian.
