Mustangs defeat McKendree

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State improved to 7-3 with its third win in three days, defeating McKendree at MSU Tennis Center on Saturday morning, 5-2.

Matthew Earle clinched the triumph for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Riccardo Ercolani at No. 5 singles. Earle has won three of his last four completed matches at No. 5 singles and improved his singles record to 3-3.

Earle and Germano Setti clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Felix Diedrichs and Riccardo Ercolani at No. 2 doubles. Earle and Setti have won seven consecutive doubles matches and improved to 8-1 for the season.

Juan David Duque and Jose Marquez started the day with a 6-1 win over Aimar Oregui and Arhaan Pahwa at No. 3 doubles, improving their record as a pairing to 2-1 in dual-match doubles.

Duque was also the first singles player off the court for the Mustangs after running away with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Luka Kalenic at No. 4 singles. Duque has a three-match winning streak in singles and won four of his last five singles matches.

Marquez has a four-match winning streak at No. 3 singles. The streak began with a 6-3, 7-5 win over No. 19-ranked Rafael Sabio of West Florida. After losing the first set to Felix Diedrichs of McKendree, Marquez rebounded nicely to prevail, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Bruno Sanchez earned his second win in three matches over a three-day span, defeating Bendix Schroeder of McKendree, 6-2, 6-4. Sanchez improved to 4-3 at No. 2 singles this season and 6-3 overall in singles.

No. 8-ranked Setti was upset at No. 1 singles, falling to Ignacio Paolini in a match tiebreak, 4-6, 6-3, 6-10. Setti is 6-2 in singles this season with all eight starts at No. 1 singles.

Tomas Leguizamon also came up short in a match tiebreak at No. 6 singles, as Aimar Oregui prevailed, 6-2, 6-7 (2), 10-5.

The Mustangs are back in action at MSU Tennis Center on Wednesday as Hawaii Hilo visits for a 2 p.m. dual.
