Mustangs wrap up road trip at UT Tyler

TYLER, Texas – Midwestern State concludes a three-game road trip as it visits UT Tyler on Monday night. Tipoff at Louise Herrington Patriot Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Midwestern State (5-14, 2-11) has a three-game losing streak following an 86-74 loss at UT Dallas despite having four players score in double figures and shooting 42.4 percent from the field.

Da'Lonna Choice hit a 3-pointer with 6:48 remaining to give MSU a 66-64 lead over the Comets, who 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to pull away from the Mustangs.

Veonce Powell played a season-high 34 minutes and was 8-of-17 from the floor en route to 19 points to lead the Mustangs scoring attack. Kerbie Cash finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, and she dished out a season-high five assists for MSU. Ta'Leeyah Glynn was 3 of 7 from beyond the arc on her way to 14 points. Macie Upshaw finished 5 of 6 from the field and had 13 points to go with six rebounds.

The Mustangs had 10 steals in the loss at UT Dallas, led by Powell with three. Cash, Glynn and Choice each had two steals for the Mustangs, who scored 13 points off 20 turnovers.

MSU is second in the conference and 29th among NCAA Division II programs with 12.3 steals per game. Cash leads the team and is third in the league with 2.2 steals per game. The Mustangs are forcing 21 turnovers per game, which is fourth best in the Lone Star Conference.


The Mustangs are fifth in the LSC with 2.8 blocks per game, and Macie Upshaw leads the team with 17 blocks in 19 games, which is seventh-most among shot blockers in the conference.

Midwestern State is attempting the fifth-most free throws in the country with 24.4 per game, which is second-most in the conference. MSU is fourth in the nation with 17.4 free throws made per outing, which leads the LSC. The Mustangs are fifth in the conference with a 71.5 percent conversion rate from the foul line.

Cash is 96 of 128 from the free-throw line (.750), sitting third in the LSC in both attempts and free throws made. The sophomore from Wiley, Texas, has the sixth-best free-throw percentage in the conference.

Cash is the fifth-leading scorer in the LSC with 16.4 points per game. Glynn is the second-leading scorer for the Stang Gang with 9.5 points per game. The Mustangs have the fifth-best free-throw shooting percentage in the conference, hitting 71.6 percent of their foul shots.

The Mustangs are leading the conference and 19th in the nation with 15.4 offensive rebounds per game, and they are fourth in the league with 38.3 boards per game.

Cash is the leading rebounder for MSU with 7.4 boards per game, which is fifth-most in the LSC, and Macie Upshaw is ninth in the conference with 6.5 rebounds per game. Upshaw and Cash are both pulling down 2.7 offensive rebounds per outing, and the duo sits sixth in the league among offensive rebounders.

Midwestern State is averaging 65.3 points per game, while it holds opponents to 68 points per outing.

UT TYLER (14-8, 10-3)

The Patriots won their last six meetings with Midwestern State to take a 6-5 lead in the all-time series. UT Tyler defeated the Mustangs at Louise Herrington Patriot Center last season, 63-56, despite Kerbie Cash scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for MSU.

UT Tyler is coming off a 63-51 loss to Texas Woman's at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton on Thursday night. Leila Davis was 6 of 10 from the field and led the Patriots with 19 points, while Polina Latysheva scored 14 points, and Mileina Sablinskaite pulled down nine rebounds in the loss.

The Patriots are 6-2 at home with three-straight wins, including a 55-45 victory over No. 15-ranked Lubbock Christian in their last home date on Jan. 22.

UT Tyler has the third-best scoring defense in NCAA Division II, holding opponents to 50.6 points per game, which leads the LSC. The Patriots score 58.5 points and shoot 37.7 percent from the field, while the opposition shoots 36.7 percent. The plus-7.8 scoring margin is fifth best in the conference.

The Patriots attempt more 3-point shots than any team in the LSC — 25.4 attempts per game — but only convert on 28.8 percent of those shots from beyond the arc.

UT Tyler is forcing 22 turnovers per game, which is second in the conference, and its plus-6 turnover margin leads the league. The Patriots are stealing the ball more than any team in the LSC with 13.1 per outing.

Sablinskaite (54), Latysheva (50), and Mariah Neal (43) are the three conference leaders in steals.

Davis leads the Patriots with 11.4 points per game, and Latysheva is adding 10.3 per contest. Hayley Cumming, who is 40 of 126 (37%) from 3-point range, is scoring 9.6 points per game.

Davis is also the leading rebounder for UT Tyler with 5.9 boards per game, and Sablinskaite is corralling 5.8 caroms per contest.

Latysheva leads the team with three assists per game.

Midwestern State is back in action on Thursday night as it hosts Texas A&M International at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
