LUBBOCK, Texas – Midwestern State won three of its last four games as it embarks on a three-game road trip. The Mustangs visit No. 9-ranked Lubbock Christian on Tuesday night with tipoff at the Rip Griffin Center scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Midwestern State (7-11, 5-6) is coming off back-to-back wins over Cameron and Oklahoma Christian.
The Mustangs earned their first road win of the season on Thursday night, defeating Cameron in double-overtime, 86-79, led by
DaCannon Wesley, who scored 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a 3-for-3 performance from beyond the arc. Wesley was one of three Mustangs to score in double figures.
Orlando Horton, Jr. finished with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Terrance Ramirez added 15 points, and
Jordan Reed pitched in 11 points for the Mustangs, who hit 4-of-6 shots in the second overtime period and shot 46.1 percent for the game. Midwestern State improved its road record to 1-6 with the victory at Aggie Gym.
Two days later, Horton scored 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting and was the only Mustang in double figures as MSU avenged a loss earlier this season by defeating Oklahoma Christian at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 73-68. Horton also had four assists and four rebounds in the triumph. Butler pulled down six rebounds for the Mustangs, whose bench scored 33 points, while OC reserves finished with just eight points.
Midwestern State is second in the Lone Star Conference and 14th among NCAA Division II schools with 34 points per game from the bench.
Midwestern State is scoring 75.6 points per game but is allowing opponents to score 79.7 points per contest. The Mustangs are third in the league with 14.7 fast-break points per game. MSU is shooting 44.1 percent from the field, and its opponents are shooting 44.7 percent.
Horton is one of three player averaging double figures for the Mustangs with 12 points per game.
Jonathan Jackson, who is hitting 42.3 percent of his shots from 3-point range (44 of 104), and Ramirez are both scoring 10.3 points per game. Butler and
Charles McClennahan, Jr. are both scoring more than nine points per game.
McClennahan is the leading rebounder for the Mustangs with 5.2 boards per game, while
Tehshaundre Cole is grabbing five rebounds per contest. Midwestern State is sixth in the LSC with 36.9 rebounds per game.
Midwestern State is facing Lubbock Christian for the second time this season. Amondo Miller scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Chaparrals in a 73-68 victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Jan. 8. Kendall Dow poured in 18 points for LCU, which hit 10-of-28 shots from 3-point range, while MSU was 4-of-15 from long distance.
Lubbock Christian leads the all-time series, 31-18, and is 19-7 when hosting Midwestern State. LCU won 11 of the last 14 meetings, including a 74-57 victory in the regular season finale at Rip Griffin Center last season.
Lubbock Christian (18-3, 9-2) avenged an 87-83 loss at Cameron earlier this season with a resounding 107-50 win over the Aggies at Rip Griffin Center on Saturday. The Chaparrals outscored Cameron in the paint, 58-14, and scored 25 points off 15 turnovers. The Chaps, who shot 61 percent from the field, went on a 30-0 run to take a 45-9 lead in the first half. Kendall Dow scored a team-leading 21 points, converting 4 of 7 from beyond the arc. Amondo Miller Jr. added 18 points in the victory.
Lubbock Christian's 57-point margin of victory was its largest under head coach Todd Duncan, surpassing the previous 56-point win against Open Bible College on Nov. 15, 2013.
Duncan is 287-146 in his 15th season at Lubbock Christian, which has won at least 23 games in three of the last four seasons.
The Chaparrals are 6-1 at home this season with their only loss coming against Eastern New Mexico on Jan. 17, when the Greyhounds prevailed, 85-80.
Miller is the leading scorer for LCU with 19.2 points per game, but four other players are scoring in double figures. Antonio Pusateri is averaging 16.1 points per contest, while Dow pours in 15.7 points per game. Lucas Mercandino and Alex Anamekwe are both scoring more than 11 points per outing for the Chaparrals, who average 80.4 points per game and lead the conference with a field goal percentage of 50.5, shooting a league-best 39.6 percent from 3-point range.
Dow leads the league with 2.7 3-pointers per game and a 42.5 shooting percentage from beyond the arc. LCU has the ninth-best 3-point shooting percentage in the country among D2 programs.
Lubbock Christian is holding opponents to 67.9 points per game and its opponents shoot 41.7 percent from the field. The Chaps have a plus-4.2 rebounding margin with 36.8 rebounds per game. LCU boasts the third-best scoring defense in the conference, holding the opposition to 67.9 points per game.
Pusateri leads the LSC with 10.9 rebounds per game, and Miller is third in the conference with 8.7 boards per outing.
Miller and Pusateri are tied for the conference lead with 7.4 offensive rebounds per game, which is seventh-most in NCAA Division II.
LCU is only committing 11 turnovers per and has a turnover margin of zero this season.
Mercandino and Miller are both among the top-10 in the LSC with more than 1.5 assists per game. Mercandino is dishing out 1.9 assists per game, and Miller distributes 1.6 helpers per contest.
Midwestern State visits UT Dallas on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. before traveling to UT Tyler on Feb. 9 to play a game rescheduled due to inclement weather on Jan. 24.
