LAWTON, Okla. — Midwestern St. (6-11, 4-6 Lone Star) edged past Cameron (6-13, 3-8 Lone Star) with an impressive season-high 86-79 victory in double-overtime on Thursday at Aggie Gymnasium. The Mustangs capitalized on 19 points off turnovers and secured 45 points from their bench to seal the win. They also achieved a season-high by making 35 field goals in the game, showcasing their offensive prowess.
Midwestern State opened the game with a strong offensive performance, overcoming an early 3-pointer by Cameron's Michael Jones with a jumper from
Tehshaundre Cole and a 3-pointer by
DaCannon Wesley. Wesley, who achieved a season-high by scoring 18 points, was instrumental in this effort. The teams exchanged leads multiple times, with Midwestern State pulling ahead by as much as nine points at one stage, fueled by
Jonathan Jackson's precision from beyond the arc and
Orlando Horton, Jr.'s contributions at the free-throw line. CU responded with a surge of their own, highlighted by Jaden Juarez's 3-pointer at the 7:01 mark to close the gap. In the final minute, Wesley's fast break dunk tied the score, and with 41 seconds remaining, his 3-pointer gave the Maroon & Gold the lead. Horton Jr. sealed the half with a jumper, bringing the score to 40-35 in favor of MSU at the end of the first half.
In the second half, the Mustangs maintained a narrow lead over the Aggies, highlighted by
Tehshaundre Cole's dunk at 10:57, assisted by
Orlando Horton, Jr., pushing the score to 55-45. CU responded with a 3-pointer from Brodie McWhinney at the 41-second mark, narrowing the gap to 68-67. Wesley immediately answered with a 3-pointer, regaining the lead for the Maroon & Gold. However, Jaden Juarez's layup with 11 seconds left tied the game at 70. MSU had a final opportunity to secure the win, but a missed jumper by
Terrance Ramirez sent the contest to overtime.
Midwestern St. and Cameron remained locked in a tight contest during the first overtime, each adding four points to their totals. Ramirez gave the Maroon & Gold a brief lead at 2:19 with a fastbreak layup, pulling the visitors ahead 72-70. Cameron's Arzhonte Dallas responded by converting two free throws at the 2:06 mark to tie the game. Horton, Jr. then pushed the Maroon & Gold back in front with a layup at 1:40, but Michael Jones of Cameron equalized once more with a layup in the final minute. Both teams struggled with shooting, with CU making only one field goal out of seven attempts and MSU converting two of eight.
Midwestern State secured a 12-5 advantage in the second overtime to close out the victory over the Aggies. Horton Jr. played a pivotal role, contributing six points in the paint and a crucial assist to
Jordan Reed, who added four points, including two free throws at the 43-second mark. Horton Jr. also achieved a personal milestone, scoring a season-high seven field goals. CU's attempts to rally fell short as they struggled with turnovers and missed opportunities. Despite a late layup by CJ Yao with 5 seconds remaining, the Aggies could not overcome the deficit.
Wesley led the team with 18 points, converting 6 of 8 field goals and all three of his attempts from beyond the arc. Horton Jr. contributed 16 points, dished out five assists, and recorded three steals. Ramirez added 15 points and made two steals, while Cole posted five rebounds and blocked two shots.
Yao led CU with 18 points, connecting on three of seven attempts from beyond the arc and converting seven of eight free throws. Jones matched Yao's scoring total with 18 points, and he dominated the boards with 15 rebounds. Jones also contributed defensively with two blocks. Dallas added 13 points, including one 3-pointer, and dished out four assists. Juarez was active defensively, collecting two steals while adding eight points and four assists.
In their next game, Midwestern St. will host Oklahoma Christian on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. The matchup will take place at D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas.
