MSU knocks off Auburn Montgomery, 4-3

TYLER, Texas – No. 24-ranked Midwestern State earned its second straight win at the Lone Star/Gulf South crossover event on Saturday, edging Auburn Montgomery, 4-3, following a 5-2 win over West Alabama on Friday.

Matthew Earle won the clincher for Midwestern State at No. 5 singles as the Mustangs improved to 4-2 to start the season. Auburn Montgomery has suffered three consecutive defeats to fall to 2-6.

Earle and Germano Setti earned a 6-3 win over Daniel Margoulis and Guillermo Vedia Sanchez at No. 2 doubles, but the Warhawks took the doubles point to start the dual match.

Setti, ranked No. 7 in singles, pulled the Mustangs to even terms as he waltzed to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Giuseppe Bonaiuti at No.  1 singles.

Setti is 5-0 to start the season for MSU. It was his first victory in straight sets over an NCAA Division II opponent since defeating Dominik Wijntjes of Northwest Missouri State, 6-1, 6-2, on Feb. 6.

Auburn Montgomery reclaimed the lead, 2-1, when Lucas Rosvall defeated Jose Marquez at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

No. 33-ranked Juan David Duque won his first match at No. 4 singles this season with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Raphael Pertusier.

Bruno Sanchez won a tussle with Jami Savolainen at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4). Sanchez improved to 4-1, and MSU was poised for victory.

Earle prevailed in a second-set tiebreak to put the Mustangs in the winner's circle, defeating Harry McDonagh, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Cesar Loeches Llamas fell to Daniel Margoulis in a match tiebreak at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 8-10.

Midwestern State tangles with No. 2 ranked West Florida on Sunday in its third dual match against GSC opponents.
