Lobos and Western Mustangs invade D.L. Ligon Coliseum for final two games of the season

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State closes out its season this week as Sul Ross State and Western New Mexico visit the Mustangs at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Lobos visit on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m., and MSU welcomes WNMU for Senior Day and the season finale on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Midwestern State (8-17, 6-12) hopes to end a four-game losing streak and improve upon its 6-5 record under the dome.

The Mustangs are coming off an 80-67 loss at Angelo State as the Rams hit 11-of-26 shots from 3-point range. Angelo State had 25 assists on 30 field goals and shot 49.2 percent from the field in the victory at Junell Center on Saturday. Terrance Ramirez had 13 points and three assists for the Mustangs. Jonathan Jackson scored 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting in the loss.

Jackson is seventh in the nation in 3-point accuracy and leads the LSC at 44.8 percent (60 of 134) shooting from 3-point range. The senior from Sachse, Texas, is scoring 10.3 points per game.

Orlando Horton Jr. is the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 12.3 points per game, and he has scored double figures in each of his last 11 appearances for MSU, but he did not play in the game at San Angelo on Saturday. Horton is shooting 48.8 percent from the field, and he made 69 of 87 free throws (.793), leading the team in free throws made and free-throw percentage.

Terrance Ramirez is averaging 11.6 points a game for the Mustangs, who score 75.3 points per game.

Horton and Ramirez are combining for more than six assists per game. Horton leads the team with 3.5 assists per game, and Ramirez is second with 2.6 helpers per outing.

Midwestern State is third in the LSC and 21st in the country with 31.6 points per game coming off the bench, and the Stangs are second in the LSC with 14.6 fastbreak points per game.

Davyon Butler is contributing 9.9 points per game, while Charles McClennahan, Jr. is scoring 8.9 points per game.

McClennahan and Tehshandre Cole are both pulling down 7.7 rebounds per game to lead the Mustangs. Kadon Jackson is averaging 4.6 boards per outing, and Jonathan Jackson is grabbing 4.3 rebounds per game.

Midwestern State is seventh in the league with 36.3 rebounds per game this season.

SUL ROSS STATE (4-20, 2-16)

Midwestern State won its last five meetings with the Lobos and leads the all-time series, 7-1. The last time Sul Ross State defeated MSU was at Fort Worth in December of 1965, and the Lobos prevailed, 89-87. The Mustangs won the only encounter at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 88-62, last season. MSU won both meetings last season, including a 75-63 win in Alpine, Texas, last February.

Sul Ross State has an eight-game losing streak and is 0-10 on the road this season following an 82-67 loss at UT Dallas on Tuesday night. Antwonne Holmes scored 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting for the Lobos, who were outrebounded 41-30.

Jackson Thoele is the leading scorer for the Lobos with 15.7 points per game, while Holmes is pitching in 12.1 points per game. Tim Mikhailov is scoring 10.2 points per game for Sul Ross State, which is scoring 64.7 points per game.

Camren Cooper leads the Lobos with 3.8 assists per game, and Holmes is dishing out 2.7 helpers per outing.

Opponents are scoring 77.5 points per game and outrebounding the Lobos, 39.8 – 32.2 per game this season.

Thoele is the leading rebounder for Sul Ross State with 5.7 boards per game, and Holmes is pulling down 5.3 rebounds per game.

WESTERN NEW MEXICO (21-5, 14-4)

Midwestern State is 18-3 in the all-time series against WNMU and has won the last four meetings, including an 82-53 victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season. The Western Mustangs are 0-9 when visiting Midwestern State, which posted a 68-46 victory in Silver City last February.

Western New Mexico is visiting Lubbock Christian on Thursday night before facing the Mustangs. WNMU enters its final road trip of the regular season with a five-game winning streak and won its last three road games. The Western Mustangs are 10-3 as the visiting team this season.

Cortaviaus Seales is the leading scorer for WNMU with 14.6 points per game and is shooting 48.4 percent from the field. Isaiah Broady is scoring 12.7 points per game for the Western Mustangs while Kelly Carson is pitching in 12.3 points per game and is shooting 38 percent from 3-point range.

Andre Harris is scoring 11.1 points per game for WNMU, which is scoring 77.7 points per game and holding opponents to 71.1 points per game. The Western Mustangs has the third-best 3-point percentage defense in the league, holding foes to 28.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

Western New Mexico is scoring a league-leading 18.3 points per game from the free-throw line and is second in the league with 24.7 free-throw attempts per game. WNMU has the fourth best free-throw percentage at 74.4.

The Western Mustangs are shooting 45.3 percent from the field while holding opponents to 40.3 percent shooting from the field.

Midwestern State will recognize the contributions of its seniors before the start of the game on Saturday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
