Washburn handles road-worn Mustangs in Topeka, 4-2

TOPEKA, Kansas – Camila Garcia remained undefeated in singles during the dual-match season, and No. 8-ranked Midwestern State earned the doubles point to start the day at Washburn, but the 11th-ranked Ichabods pulled out a 4-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Genesis Tennis Center.

Midwestern State suffers its first loss of the campaign and is 3-1, while Washburn improved its record to 3-0.

Selin Sepken and Emilia Gyorgy clinched the first point of the day for the Mustangs with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Daniela Tijaro and Renske Ubachs. Garcia and Jasmine Crain defeated Peyton Koper and Riko Konno at No. 2 doubles, 6-2.

With the Mustangs trailing 3-1 at the conclusion of three singles matches, Garcia kept the Mustangs in contention with a rollercoaster 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 victory over Tijaro at No. 3 singles. Garcia has won all six of her singles matches during the dual-match season and is 3-0 against NCAA Division II opponents.

Charlotte Bair scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mala Krzanic-Sullivan at No. 6 singles as the Ichabods pulled even with MSU after losing the doubles point.

Razick Saajida ended Alessia Dolce's four-match winning streak with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the sophomore from Italy.

Emilia Gyorgy, ranked No. 42 in the nation, lost two closely contested sets to No. 40-ranked Riko Konno, 5-7, 5-7. Gyorgy, a freshman from Hungary, fell to 5-2 in her seven singles matches during the dual-match campaign.

Jasel Bailey ended the day with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Jasmine Crain at No. 4 singles.

Sepken, ranked No. 10 in the nation, split sets with No. 14-ranked Ubachs at No. 1 singles and was tied 2-2 in the third set when the Ichabods clinched the victory.

Washburn lost its previous nine encounters with the Mustangs, including four consecutive 4-3 losses, but ended its streak of futility against MSU, which was playing its fourth dual match in four days and traveled 300 miles after defeating Rockhurst in Kearney, Nebraska, on Saturday.

Midwestern State meets West Alabama at Summers Tennis Center in Tyler, Texas, on Friday morning at 10 a.m.
