KEARNEY, Neb. – Nebraska Kearney captured the doubles point and got straight-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to upend Midwestern State, 4-3, on Friday night at Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.
No. 18-ranked Midwestern State is 1-1 on the season after dropping its first of three dual matches on a weekend road trip.
Juan David Duque and
Bruno Sanchez picked up a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles to start the night for the Mustangs, defeating Ilan Fuentes and Tom van den Dungen, 6-3.
Germano Setti and
Matthew Earle were defeated by Ivan Melnik and Andy Brisdon at No. 2 doubles, 6-3.
The first point of the dual would be decided in a doubles' tiebreak.
Cesare Carpano and Jakub Strzelecki prevailed over Cesar Llamas Loeches and
Jose Marquez at No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (3).
Fuentes needed less than an hour to give the Lopers a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Loeches at No. 5 singles.
No. 35-ranked Andy Brisdon posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Duque at No. 2 singles as UNK took a commanding 3-0 lead in the dual match.
Jose Marquez earned the first point for the Mustangs with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Alex Jaulin at No. 4 singles. Marquez improved to 2-0 on the season in singles.
Strzelecki pulled out a 6-3, 6-4 win over Earle at No. 6 singles, clinching the victory for the Lopers.
Sanchez improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Carpano at No. 3 singles, and Setti outlasted Melnik in a match tiebreak at No. 1 singles after splitting the first two sets, 7-5, 3-6.
Setti is 2-0 to begin the campaign for the Stangs, who meet Rockhurst at Ernest Grundy Tennis Center at 1 p.m. on Saturday and travel to Topeka, Kansas, for a dual with No. 4-ranked Washburn at noon on Sunday.
