Midwestern State looks to extend winning streak

ODESSA, Texas -- Midwestern State hopes to maintain the momentum it captured during its recent homestand as it visits UT Permian Basin and Angelo State this week. Tipoff at UTPB Gym Complex on Thursday is scheduled for 5:15 p.m., and the Mustangs take on the Rambelles Saturday afternoon at Junell Center with tipoff at 1 p.m.

Kyra Seggewiss saw the Mustangs defeat both Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Kingsville in her first two games as the interim head coach.

Midwestern State (7-15, 4-12) won back-to-back games for the first time since its trip to Puerto Rico in December.

Kerbie Cash scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to a 67-60 win over the Javelinas on Saturday. It was the fifth double-double of the season for Cash, who has five other games where she was a rebound shy of a double-double.

Da'Lonna Choice scored 13 points in the win over TAMUK and has scored double digits in three of her last four games, including a season-high 22-point performance against TAMIU in a 78-66 victory on Feb. 12 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. 

Veonce Powell has scored double digits in seven of her last eight games for the Mustangs, but she was held to nine points by the Dustdevils last week on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. Powell is shooting 44 percent from 3-point range (11 of 25) in her last six games for the Mustangs.

Cash is the leading scorer for MSU and third in the Lone Star Conference with 16.8 points per game. She is third in the league and leading the team with 7.7 rebounds per game. 

Midwestern State is second in the league with 15 offensive rebounds per contest and is pulling down 37.9 total rebounds per game, which is sixth most in the LSC.

Macie Upshaw and Cash are both grabbing more than 2.5 offensive rebounds per outing and are among the top 10 in the LSC.

Upshaw is second on the team with 6.2 rebounds per game, and she is averaging nearly a block per game. The freshman from Round Rock, Texas, has the ninth-most blocks in the LSC with 18. Midwestern State is sixth in the league with 2.7 blocks per game.

The Mustangs are second in the conference and 31st among NCAA Division II programs with 11.9 steals per game. Cash leads the team and is third in the league with 2.2 steals per game. The Mustangs are forcing 21.5 turnovers per game, which is third best in the Lone Star Conference.

Cash and Ta'Leeyah Glynn are leading the team in steals. Cash swipes the ball from the opposition 2.2 times per game, and Glynn is averaging two steals. 

Midwestern State is attempting the third-most free throws in the conference with 23.3 per game, which is 13th-most in the country. MSU is 13th in the nation with 16.5 free throws made per outing, which is second in the LSC. The Mustangs are fifth in the conference with a 70.7 percent conversion rate from the foul line.

Cash is 107 of 145 from the free-throw line (.738), sitting third in the LSC in both attempts and free throws made. The sophomore from Wiley, Texas, has the ninth-best free-throw percentage in the conference.

Midwestern State is averaging 65.5 points per game, while opponents are scoring 68 points per outing.

UT PERMIAN BASIN (14-10, 9-7)


Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Falcons, 12-10, but UTPB won eight of its last 11 meetings with the Mustangs, including a 68-45 triumph at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Dec. 5.  The Falcons raced out to a 22-7 lead in the first quarter, and Kenadi Rising scored 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting as UTPB improved to 5-7 as the visiting team in the series. 

The Mustangs won their last visit to Odessa, 62-57, and improved their record at the UTPB Gym Complex to 5-5.

UT Permian Basin is 7-5 at home this season and has won its last two home games, including a 71-60 win over Western New Mexico on Feb. 7.

The Falcons are coming off a 69-57 win at St. Edward's, which was the 100th win for Rae Boothe as the head coach at UTPB.
UT Permian Basin is holding on to eighth place in the conference standings with four games remaining as it attempts to become one of the eight teams at the LSC Postseason Tournament.

Jonesha Neal scored 18 points to lead the Falcons against the Hilltoppers as she hit 11 of 17 from the free-throw line. Madison Walters added 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, and Rising finished with 12 points for the Falcons, who outscored the Mustangs in the paint, 40-14.

Rising is the leading scorer for UTPB with 9.9 points per game, and Walters is pitching in 8.7 points per outing for the Falcons, who are 10th in the conference with 61.9 points per contest. UTPB boasts the sixth-best scoring defense in the conference, allowing just 59 points per game.

The Falcons have the fourth-best field goal percentage in the LSC at 41.5 percent, and they are fifth in the league with 10.3 steals per game.

Walters leads the team with 1.88 steals per game, and she had one of the eight steals against MSU in the first meeting of the season. UTPB scored 19 points off 14 Midwestern State turnovers in the last encounter.

ANGELO STATE (13-9, 11-5) 


Midwestern State has won three of its last four meetings with the Rambelles and is 35-43 in the all-time series. 

Cash scored 23 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had four steals to lead the Mustangs in a 65-58 victory over Angelo State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Dec. 3. Midwestern State scored 26 points off 28 turnovers in the conference opener 78 days ago.

The Mustangs lost their visit to Junell Center last season, 84-61, as Majik Esquivel scored 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range. Cash had 11 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

Angelo State hosts Lubbock Christian on Thursday night before the Mustangs visit, and the Rambelles enter the week with an eight-game winning streak, including their last four games at Junell Center.

Landry Morrow scored 18 points in a 59-53 win at St. Mary's, outscoring the Rattlers in the fourth quarter, 18-12.

Esquivel is the leading scorer for Angelo State, and she is fourth in the LSC with 16.7 points per game. The sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, has the most field goal attempts in the conference with 325, and she has the second-most made field goals with 130. She is fourth in the conference with a field goal percentage of 40 and has the third-most 3-pointers in the league with 48 on 153 attempts, which is 31.4 percent from beyond the arc — fourth best in the LSC.

Keniah Williams is second in the conference with 41 total blocks this season, and the Rambelles are second in the league with 4.1 blocks per game. 

Angelo State boasts the best field-goal percentage defense in the conference, holding teams to 35 percent shooting from the field and just 29 percent from beyond the arc.

The Rambelles are outscoring teams 62.9 -58.0 this season. 

Midwestern State closes out the regular season with a pair of home games against Sul Ross State and Western New Mexico. The Lobos visit D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Feb. 26 with tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
