MSU looks to roll on against Javelinas

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State is looking for back-to-back wins as Texas A&M-Kingsville visits D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.


Midwestern State (6-15, 3-12) is coming off an emotional 78-66 victory over Texas A&M International on Thursday night. Kyra Seggewiss was named interim head coach after the resignations of head coach Brenita Jackson and assistant coach Kevin Jackson were announced earlier in the afternoon, and the Mustangs raced out to a 16-2 lead over the Dustdevils with 2:55 remaining in the first quarter. 


Da'Lonna Choice scored 22 points, hitting 4-of-5 shots from 3-point range, and the junior guard from Mesquite, Texas, dished out four assists in the victory as the Mustangs ended a four-game losing streak. Kerbie Cash finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Ta'Leeyah Glynn scored 13 points and also had five assists. 


The Mustangs were 8 of 17 from beyond the arc and scored 40 points in the paint as they improved to 3-7 at home this season.


Cash is the leading scorer for MSU and fifth in the Lone Star Conference with 16.5 points per game. She is fourth in the league and leading the team with 7.6 rebounds per game. 


Midwestern State is second in the league with 14.9 offensive rebounds per contest and is pulling down 37.8 total rebounds per game, which is sixth most in the LSC.


Macie Upshaw and Cash are both grabbing more than 2.5 offensive rebounds per outing and are among the top 10 in the LSC.


Upshaw is second on the team with 6.3 rebounds per game, and she is averaging nearly a block per game. The freshman from Round Rock, Texas, has the ninth-most blocks in the LSC with 18. Midwestern State is fifth in the league with 2.7 blocks per game.


The Mustangs are second in the conference and 29th among NCAA Division II programs with 12 steals per game. Cash leads the team and is third in the league with 2.2 steals per game. The Mustangs are forcing 21 turnovers per game, which is fourth best in the Lone Star Conference.


Cash and Ta'Leeyah Glynn are leading the team in steals. Cash swipes the ball from the opposition 2.2 times per game, and Glynn is averaging two steals. 

Midwestern State is attempting the third-most free throws in the conference with 23.1 per game, which is 12th-most in the country. MSU is 13th in the nation with 16.4 free throws made per outing, which is second in the LSC. The Mustangs are fifth in the conference with a 70.8 percent conversion rate from the foul line.


Cash is 99 of 134 from the free-throw line (.739), sitting third in the LSC in both attempts and free throws made. The sophomore from Wiley, Texas, has the ninth-best free-throw percentage in the conference.


Midwestern State is averaging 65.4 points per game, while opponents are scoring 68.4 points per outing.
 

TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE (5-16, 5-10)


Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Javelinas, 29-23, but has won just four of the last 10 meetings and has a five-game losing streak in the series. MSU is 16-9 when hosting TAMUK but has lost the last two encounters at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.


Last season in Kingsville, Midwestern State took a 24-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and went to the locker room at halftime with a 36-28 lead, but TAMUK outscored the Mustangs in the fourth quarter 26-9 en route to a 72-56 victory. The Javelinas shot 50 percent from the field and outrebounded the Mustangs, 36-31.


Texas A&M-Kingsville is coming off back-to-back losses and is 2-6 on the road this season following a 57-54 loss to No. 23-ranked Lubbock Christian. Jade Perez and Kaylee Howell each scored 13 points, and Kaycee Groves added 11 for the Javelinas, who outscored the Lady Chaps in the second half, 35-22.


Groves is the leading scorer for TAMUK with 10.4 points per game. She is also the second-leading rebounder with 5.3 boards per game, and she is second on the team in assists with 2.5 per contest.


Thalia Daniels leads the Javelinas with 5.8 boards per outing, and Addisyn Parker leads the team with three assists per game. Parker is playing the third-most minutes in the LSC with 34.1 minutes per game.


Texas A&M-Kingsville is 14th in the LSC with 54.4 points per game, shooting 39 percent from the field. Opponents are shooting 39.8 percent and scoring 60.5 points per game.


The Javelinas have the fourth-best rebounding margin in the LSC at plus-4.4, grabbing 35.4 rebounds per game. 


Michael Madrid is in his seventh season as head coach of the Javelinas and is 83-94.


Midwestern State is on the road next week to play UT Permian Basin on Thursday night. Tipoff at UTPB Gym Complex is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
