HUMBLE, Texas – No. 39-ranked Midwestern State shot 10-over 298 in the final round at the Houston Classic on Tuesday and finished in fourth place, 27 strokes behind Dallas Baptist.
The No. 23-ranked Patriots lifted the trophy after finishing 14-under 850 — 16 strokes ahead of second place Harding through three rounds at the Golf Club of Houston.
Seth Bearden, who is ranked No. 24 in the nation, closed with a 3-over 75 and finished in seventh place at 2-under 214 through 54 holes. The senior from Crowell, Texas, was 11 strokes behind Bryant Hiskey II of Houston, who won the individual title by two strokes over Samuel Jenkins of Dallas Baptist.
Bearden was a stroke behind Luke Cote of Southern Arkansas and Daniel Ferguson of Dallas Baptist, who tied for fifth place. Jose Manuel Peralta of Harding placed third at 9-under 207, and Karsten Paciotti of Central Oklahoma was fourth at 4-under 212.
Bearden birdied the par-5 13th hole for the second time during the tournament and had four bogies during his final round. Bearden had six birdies in the opening round and three in the second round.
Anniston McIlwain showed consistency throughout the event, and after starting 3-over through the first four holes in his final round, the sophomore from Bulverde, Texas, carded three birdies over the final 12 holes and had just one more bogey for a 1-over 73. McIlwain finished in 14th place at 2-over 218.
Nathan Nelson and
Ryan Griff finished tied for 26th at 7-over 223. Griff shot 3-over 75 for the second straight day after opening the tournament with a 1-over 73. Nelson followed up his 1-under 71 in the second round with a 3-over 75 on the final day. Nelson birdied the par-5, 564-yard No. 8 hole in all three rounds.
Hank Germany had four straight birdies on the back nine during his round on Tuesday and carded his best round at 3-over 75. Germany finished 55th at 13-over 229 through 54 holes.
The Mustangs will be at Dominion Country Club in San Antonio for the Rattler Invitational, hosted by St. Mary's on Feb. 16 and 17.
