MANSFIELD, Texas – Midwestern State wrapped up the Lone Star D2 College Classic on Sunday afternoon. No. 9-ranked Augustana (S.D.) defeated the Mustangs in the first game on Fields at Station 63, 8-4, but Drury needed eight innings to edge MSU (1-3) in the second game, 2-1.
Augustana (S.D.) 8, Midwestern State 4
The Vikings hit three RBI doubles in the first inning to take an early lead, but Chipper Mayorga delivered an RBI single in the top of the third inning, scoring Erikha Ibarra-Subia from second base to cut the Augustana lead to 3-1.
In the home half of the third inning, the Vikings scored five runs on three hits, taking advantage of four MSU errors to establish an 8-1 lead.
Hayeli Acosta, Sydnie Rios, Stormy Daniel and Chipper all singled in the fifth inning, and the Mustangs scored three runs. Chipper drove in two runs with a base hit down the left field line, and Acosta scored on a wild pitch.
Chipper finished 2-for-3 with a walk and drove in three runs for Midwestern State, which had seven hits — all singles — in the loss.
Shyanne Florence got the start in the circle and worked two innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits, and she issued four walks while recording one strikeout. Audrey Sierra worked four innings of relief and allowed just one earned run on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Drury 2, Midwestern State 1 (8 innings)
Midwestern State managed to send the game into extra innings with a run in the seventh but was unable to overcome Drury, which scored the decisive run in the eighth.
Midwestern State and Drury faced off in a tightly contested game. In the early innings, both teams struggled to find offensive momentum, with Midwestern State managing only a ground-rule double by Chipper Mayorga in the first inning while holding Drury scoreless through three innings. The fourth inning saw continued defensive efforts from the Mustangs, as they allowed just one hit while maintaining a scoreless tie.
The fifth inning marked the first breakthrough for the Panthers, as Gabrielle Bax delivered an RBI double to put them ahead 1-0. MSU's defense remained resilient, preventing further damage by recording crucial outs. The Maroon & Gold responded in the seventh inning, tying the game 1-1 with a clutch RBI single by Sydnie Rios, scoring Hayeli Acosta from second base.
Drury regained the lead in the eighth inning with an RBI double from Claire Nelson, pushing the score to 2-1. Despite Midwestern State's efforts to rally, the game concluded with the Panthers securing a narrow 2-1 victory.
Kayleigh Bowers delivered a complete game, recording five strikeouts while allowing one earned run over eight innings. Sydnie Rios contributed with a hit and an RBI in her four plate appearances, also stealing one base. Chipper Mayorga added two hits, including a double, in four at-bats, and successfully stole a base. Marisela Landa collected a double in her three plate appearances, advancing one runner.
