CLAREMORE, Okla. — Midwestern State earned a split in day one of the ROgers State Festival, moving to 2-4 on the season. In the opening game, the Mustangs fell 1-0 to Southern Nazarene, surrendering a solo home run. MSU picked up a victory in the evening game, beating Southwestern Oklahoma State, 7-6, scoring seven runs over te first two innings.
GAME 1: Southern Nazarene 1, Midwestern State 0
Erikha Ibarra-Subia reached base in the first inning after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third, but was left stranded as MSU ended the inning without a run. The Crimson Storm also failed to capitalize in the first, leaving two runners on base with no score.
In the third inning, Ibarra-Subia singled to third base for the Maroon & Gold, but was caught stealing. SNU took the lead with a solo home run from B. Nettles, creating a 1-0 advantage.
From the fourth inning onwards, both teams were held scoreless. MSU managed a single from
Chipper Mayorga in the fourth, but could not bring him home. Southern Nazarene's defense remained solid throughout the subsequent innings, preventing the Mustangs from mounting a comeback.
Ultimately, the game concluded with Southern Nazarene securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Midwestern St. despite a complete game effort from pitcher
Kayleigh Bowers, who allowed only one run on five hits while striking out four.
Ibarra-Subia recorded a hit and reached base twice, including a hit-by-pitch, while playing in right field. Mayorga added a hit in three at-bats, contributing from her spot as the second baseman. M. Stewart, serving as the catcher, made a defensive impact with four putouts and one assist. Bowers pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run over six innings, while striking out four and issuing one walk.
GAME 2: Midwestern State 7, Southwestern Oklahoma State 6
The Mustangs jumped out early on the Bulldogs, taking a 7-0 lead after the first two frames. After a scoreless top of the first, MSU loaded the bases with two outs to threaten.
Stormy Daniel and
Chipper Mayorga both reached on singles, and
Paige Scanlin reached on a hit-by-pitch, leaving the bases loaded opportunity for
Marisela Landa. Landa doubled to centerfield, clearing the bases and giving MSU a 3-0 lead after one inning.
MSU returned for more runs in the second, loading the bases with no outs to begin the inning. Daniel brought in a run with an RBI single, then Mayorga pushed across the games fifth run with a RBI ground out.
Madison Stewart followed with a double to right field to plate the third run of the inning, then Landa collected an RBI with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch. In the second, MSU scored four runs from four hits to take a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs responded with a single run in the the 3rd on a Mustangs throwing error, then put up four runs in the 5th inning to tighten the score to 7-5. SWOSU hit a grand slam in the 5th to score the runs, doing so with no outs. After a call to the bullpen ended the inning, MSU surrendered one more run in th 7th, but the Mustangs recorded the final out to take the contest, 7-6.
Daniel and
Sydnie Rios both finished with a pair of hits, with Daniel leading the team with two runs scored. Landa brought in four RBIs, providing a double alongside Stewart. Eight Mustangs tallied a hit during the contest, as six different Mustangs came across to score.
Kaylin Salazar earns the win for MSU, going 4.0+ innings with five runs allowed and seven hits allowed. The freshman struck out a pair of batters in their collegiate debut.
Isabela Cornell garnered a save in their outing, pitching the final three innings surrendering one unearned run.
The Mustangs will conclude the weekend with a pair of games on Sunday, Feb. 8 in Claremore. First,Midwestern State will face hosts No. 18 Rogers State at 2 p.m., then has a rematch against Southwestern Oklahoma State at 4 p.m.
