Midwestern State visits Cameron, hosts Oklahoma Christian

LAWTON, Okla. – Midwestern State travels north of the Red River to visit Cameron on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. and returns home for a rematch with Oklahoma Christian at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff on Saturday afternoon is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Midwestern State (4-11, 1-8) seeks to end its six-game losing streak following a 66-55 loss at No. 3-ranked Texas Woman's last Thursday.

Veonce Powell scored a season-high 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and was 4 for 4 from the free-throw line at TWU. As a team, the Mustangs hit 17 of 18 free throws against the Pioneers. Ta'Leeyah Glynn hit all six of her free throws and finished with 13 points for the Mustangs, who shot 31.5 percent (17 of 54) from the field and 23.5 percent (4 of 17) from 3-point range. MSU was outrebounded 49-34.

Kerbie Cash is the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 14.9 points per game and also leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per contest. Cash has scored 20 or more points in six games this season but was limited to four points on 1-of-8 shooting against TWU last week. 

Glynn is the second leading scorer for the Stangs with 9.5 points per game and has scored double figures in seven games this season, including two of her last three outings.

Cash is fourth in the LSC in free-throw attempts and is shooting 77.4 at the foul line (65 of 84). Glynn is hitting 72.6 percent of her free throws (45 of 62), which is 13th in the conference. MSU is making the ninth most free throws in NCAA Division II with 16.7 per game and has the 13th most attempts with 23.3 per outing. The Mustangs' conversion rate of 71.9 percent is fifth best in the conference.

The Mustangs are scoring 62.8 points per game, which is eighth in the Lone Star Conference, and they are holding opponents to 63.6 points per game, which is 11th in the league.

Midwestern State is shooting 32.4 percent from the field and 24.9 from 3-point range and ranks 15th among LSC programs in both categories. The Mustangs are also 15th in the league with 7.9 assists per game.

The Mustangs are second in the conference with 39.9 rebounds per game and lead the LSC with 15.9 offensive rebounds per game, which is 21st among NCAA Division II programs.

Macie Upshaw is pulling down 6.8 rebounds per game, which is second on the team behind Cash. Both Upshaw and Cash are grabbing 2.6 offensive rebounds per game, and they are both among the top-10 rebounders in the LSC. 

Glynn and Cash are both getting at least two steals per game and are among the conference's top 10 in that category.

Midwestern State is third in the league and 31st in the nation with 12.1 steals per game, and the Mustangs are forcing the fourth-most turnovers in the LSC with 15.6 per game.

CAMERON (2-16, 2-8)


Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Aggies, 52-35, and won three of the last four meetings, including a 61-57 victory in their last encounter at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season. Kerbie Cash scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the victory as the Mustangs enjoyed a wire-to-wire victory. MSU is 20-24 when visiting Cameron and lost its last five trips to Lawton, including a 76-71 setback two years ago, when Katie King scored 29 points for the Aggies in the season finale.

Camron is coming off a 60-56 loss to St. Edward's after posting back-to-back wins at Western New Mexico and Sul Ross State. The Aggies fell to 0-7 at home this season. 

Jeff Mahoney is in his fourth season as the head coach at Cameron and is 34-67 since taking over the reins. Mahoney came to Cameron after spending three seasons at Harrah High School in Harrah, Okla. as the head girls' basketball coach. In 2017, he led his squad to a 4A State Championship with a 28-1 record and was named the OGBCA Central Region Coach of the Year.

Madison Griggs is the leading scorer for the Aggies with 18.8 points per game, which leads the conference and is 24th among NCAA Division II players. The second-leading scorer for the Aggies is Kloe Heidebrect with 11.6 points per game.

Heidebrecht is the most prolific 3-point shooter in the LSC and is seventh in the nation with 53 made 3-point shots on 148 attempts.

Mercedes Mancha leads Cameron with 3.9 assists per game, and she is the third-leading scorer with 9.9. points per game.

The Aggies shoot 31.5 percent from beyond the arc (192 of 651) — sixth in the conference — and they are second in the LSC with 7.8 3-pointers per game. Cameron is second in the conference with 24.8 long-range shots per game. Opponents are shooting 33.7 percent from 3-point range against the Aggies.

Cameron is scoring 57.9 points per game while its opponents are scoring 74.3 points. 

Ayonna Cooper leads the team in rebounding with 6.7 boards per game, but Cameron is 15th in the league with 31.8 rebounds per outing and 14th in offensive rebounding with 8.2 per contest. The Aggies are 15th in the conference with a rebounding margin of minus-7.7, and the Aggies commit 19.6 turnovers per game.

OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN (7-11, 3-8)


Oklahoma Christian defeated the Mustangs at Payne Athletic Center last month, 75-62, shooting 71.4 percent from the field in the first half (15 of 21).  Taylor Jackson led the Eagles with 22 points and nine rebounds. Sophie Bennett dished out seven assists for Oklahoma Christian, which outscored the Mustangs in the paint, 42-22, and held MSU to 30.6 percent shooting from the field (19 of 62).

Cash led Midwestern State with 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting, while Macie Upshaw scored nine points and pulled down 12 rebounds. OC outrebounded the Stangs, 36-28.

The Eagles ended a five-game losing streak in the all-time series with their win on Dec. 13, but Midwestern State still leads the all-time series, 12-10. The Mustangs are 9-3 when hosting Oklahoma Christian and have won the last eight encounters at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, including a 69-66 victory last year.

The Eagles are coming off a 66-43 loss to St. Mary's in its last outing as the Rattlers shot 45.5 percent from the field and went 10 of 28 from beyond the arc (35.7%). St. Mary's outrebounded OC, 40-24.

Markeith Brown is in his fourth season as the head coach at Oklahoma Christian and is 31-65. The Eagles are 2-7 on the road this season.

Elikya Baseyila was the only Eagle to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. OC shot just 27.3 percent from the field and went 2 of 15 from 3-point range (13.3%).

Taylor Jackson is the leading scorer for Oklahoma Christian with 13.7 points per game, and Kenzie Willis is scoring 9.6 points per outing for the Eagles, which is averaging 64.8 points per game. 

The Eagles attempt the second-most free throws in NCAA Division II with 26.9 attempts per game but shoot just 64.5 percent from the foul line. However, 17.4 made free throws per game leads the LSC and is fifth-most in the nation.

Oklahoma Christian is fifth in the league with 38.2 rebounds per game and has the second-best rebounding margin in the conference at plus-7.9. OC grabs nearly 13 offensive rebounds per game, which sixth most in the league.

Jackson is the leading rebounder for the Eagles and fifth in the LSC with 7.4 boards per game, including 2.2 offensive rebounds per contest.

Oklahoma Christian is scoring 64.8 points per game, which is sixth in the conference, and the Eagles are allowing 64 points per game, which is 12th in the LSC. 

The Eagles are seventh in the LSC with a shooting percentage of 40.4, and they hold opponents to 38.7 percent shooting. OC is making just 26.9 percent of its 3-point shots but holding the opposition to 29.3 percent shooting from long range.

Midwestern State begins a three-game road swing with a game at Lubbock Christian on Feb. 3. Tipoff at Rip Griffin Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
