High scoring Buffaloes visit Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State hopes to end a seven-game slide as it hosts No. 16-ranked West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
 
Midwestern State (4-10, 2-5) faces its fifth straight ranked opponent after falling to No. 24-ranked Eastern New Mexico 84-60 in the middle game of its three-game homestand, and the Mustangs are 4-3 at home this season.
 
Jonathan Jackson was the leading scorer for MSU with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field with all of his shots coming from beyond the arc. Jordan Reed added 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while Orlando Horton, Jr. finished with 10 points and was 6-of-6 from the free throw line for the Mustangs, who were held to 34 percent shooting from the field and were outscored in the paint, 58-18.
 
Midwestern State is scoring 76.6 points per game and shooting 44 percent from the field, but opponents are scoring 81.8 points per game and shooting 45.9 percent from the field.
 
The Mustangs feature a balanced scoring attack with four players averaging more than 10 points per game, Charles McClennahan, Jr., Terrance Ramirez and Horton are the top scorers in Maroon & Gold with 10.6 points per game. Jackson is pouring in 10.4 points per contest. Davyon Butler is averaging 9.9 points per game.
 
Jackson leads the league with nearly 2.6 3-pointers per game and is shooting 41.4 percent from beyond the arc.
 
The Mustangs are the sixth-leading rebounding team in the LSC with 37 boards per game, and MSU is sixth in the league with 11.7 offensive rebounds per game.
 
McClennahan is pulling down a team-leading 5.6 rebounds per game, including 2.3 offensive rebounds per contest.
 
Horton is leading the Mustangs with 3.1 assists per game, and Ramirez is right behind him with 2.7 helpers per outing.

West Texas A&M leads the all-time series with Midwestern State, 48-36, and won the last encounter in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament, 70-57, outscoring the Mustangs in the second half, 44-23.

Midwestern State is 32-10 when hosting the Buffaloes and scored a 63-58 victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum last season in a game that featured seven ties and eight lead changes. 

West Texas A&M (14-4, 6-2) had a three-game wining streak halted with a 72-57 loss to No. 5-ranked Lubbock Christian at Rip Griffin Center on Thursday night, and the Buffaloes fell to 3-2 in true road games this season. The Chaparrals held WT to 34.4 percent shooting from the field and outrebounded the Buffaloes, 38-33. Fontaine Williams was the leading scorer for WT with 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting. The junior guard hit 4-of-7 shots from 3-point range, but the Buffaloes were just 6-of-26 from long distance as a team.

Williams is the leading scorer for WT this season with 19.9 points per game on 46.5 percent shooting from the field, including 39.8 percent shooting from 3-point range.  Brock Mishak is averaging 11.9 points per game, while James Parlow and Zach Brown and both scoring more than nine points per contest for the Buffaloes.

West Texas A&M attempts more than 30 3-point shots per game, which is the most in the conference and 10th most in NCAA Division II. 

Williams is shooting 85.8 percent from the free-throw line, which is second best in the LSC, and he is second in the league with 97 made free throws on 113 attempts, which is also the second most in the conference. Mishak is 46 of 57 (80.7%) from the foul line.

The Buffaloes are the best free-throw shooting team in the conference and 13th in the nation at 78.1 percent. WT makes nearly 18 free throws per game.

West Texas A&M is the top scoring team in the conference with 86.7 points per game, and the Buffaloes are allowing opponents to score 77.2 points per game, which is 12th in the LSC.

Jailyn Sledge is pulling down 5.6 rebounds per game for the Buffaloes, who are 11th in the conference with 35.2 rebounds per contest, including 9.9 offensive boards per game.

The Buffaloes are forcing the third-most turnovers in the conference with 16.8 per game, and they are scoring nearly 13 points a game on the fast break, which is eighth in the league.

West Texas A&M is only committing 11.1 turnovers per game, which is second in the LSC and 24th in NCAA Division II.

Midwestern State is on the road to face Dallas Baptist on Thursday night. Tip off at Burg Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
