WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern St. (1-0, 0-0 Lone Star) defeated Southeastern Oklahoma (0-1, 0-0 GAC) in straight sets on Thursday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, posting scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-19.
The first set opened with Midwestern State setting an early tone through a kill by Trinity Vinzant assisted by Alayna Guerrero, propelling the home team to an initial 2-0 lead. A strategic series of plays midway through the set, including a service ace by Jenna Redding, helped the Mustangs gain momentum and maintain a slim lead. As the set progressed, Arrianna Fields and Vinzant capitalized on the Savage Storm's errors, ultimately securing a 25-22 victory to close the first set.
The second set showcased a strong start for the home team, with Vinzant igniting the momentum with a kill from Guerrero, quickly followed by Vinzant's service ace for a 3-1 lead. Midwestern State extended their advantage with another scoring burst, highlighted by an attack error from Southeastern Oklahoma and consecutive points from Vinzant and Isabella Dickens, pushing the score to 14-8. Despite a late rally by the visitor that tied the game at 17, the Mustangs reclaimed control with Vinzant's pivotal kills and timely contributions from Dickens, culminating in a decisive 25-20 set win.
The third set began with the Savage Storm taking an early 2-0 lead, but the Mustangs quickly responded with a 5-0 run, highlighted by kills and a block from Dickens and Fields. Redding's consecutive service aces extended Midwestern State's lead to 13-8, and the team maintained control with consistent contributions from Vinzant and Jaiden Wright, each delivering key kills. Guerrero's playmaking was pivotal as she assisted on numerous kills, including the decisive point by Dickens, which sealed the set 25-19 for Midwestern State.
Vinzant led the Mustangs with 12 kills and 12 digs, contributing 13 points overall. Redding was effective from the service line, delivering four aces and adding 14 digs. Guerrero facilitated the offense with 37 assists, complemented by a block and a service ace. Sadie Christiansen anchored the defense, collecting a team-high 20 digs.
The Mustangs return to D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Friday to face William Jewell in the third match of the day at the Midwestern State Invitational. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. William Jewell plays the first match of the day against Newman on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m.
