WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Midwestern State (2-0, 0-0 Lone Star) swept William Jewell (0-2, 0-0 GLVC) in straight sets, 25-12, 25-17, 25-16, on Friday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, with the Mustangs totaling 44 kills and seven service aces.
The first set opened with Midwestern State establishing momentum early, as
Isabella Dickens recorded the first point with a kill.
Alayna Guerrero played a pivotal role, contributing assists on six consecutive points, including key kills by
Trinity Vinzant and
Jaiden Wright, pushing the home team to a 10-5 lead. A dominant service run by
Jenna Redding, featuring a service ace and multiple opponent errors, extended the lead to 15-5. The Mustangs maintained control throughout the set, closing with a decisive 25-12 win, highlighted by consistent offensive execution and tactical defensive plays.
The second set commenced with Midwestern State overcoming an initial deficit to tie the score at 10-10, propelled by key plays from Vinzant and Dickens. As the set progressed, the home team's momentum surged, highlighted by a service ace from Dickens and a series of effective attacks, including two pivotal kills from Vinzant, which contributed to a decisive 25-17 victory. Guerrero played a crucial role in setting up multiple scoring opportunities, assisting on several vital points that helped seal the set for the Mustangs.
The third set began with Midwestern State establishing early momentum through strategic play. Dickens opened the scoring with a kill from Guerrero, setting the tone for a competitive set. The Mustangs capitalized on a series of successful plays, including a service ace from
Demi Stauffenberg at 8-4 and a decisive block by Vinzant and Dickens at 21-15.
Arrianna Fields contributed crucial kills, while Vinzant's back-to-back kills at the end sealed the set with a 25-16 victory. Guerrero's consistent setting facilitated the team's success, securing the set with effective teamwork and execution.
Dickens led Midwestern State with 13 kills and a .462 hitting percentage, adding two service aces and two blocks for a team-high 16.5 points. Sadie Christiansen anchored the defense with 22 digs, contributing significantly to the team's backcourt efforts.
