Midwestern State shows its prowess at ITA DII Women's South Central Regional Championships

TYLER, Texas -- Selin Sepken, Camila Garcia and Emilia Gyorgy all reached the quarterfinals at the ITA DII Women's South Central Regional Championships on Friday. Garcia and Gyorgy advanced to the finals in doubles as Midwestern State exhibited its excellence at the prestigious event.

Sepken, the No. 10 seed, eliminated Anastasia Melnikova of Angelo State in the Round of 16, 6-4, 6-4, and advanced to the semifinals with an equally impressive showing in the quarterfinals. Sepken dispatched Andrea Landaeta of Texas A&M-Kingsville, 6-3, 6-3.

Sepken, a graduate student from Istanbul, Turkey, meets AnaMaria Zoric, the No. 12 seed from Lubbock Christian, in the semifinals on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

Garcia, the No. 13 seed, dismissed Namrata Makhija of UT Dallas in the Round of 16 but faced top-seeded Yona Bancarel in the quarterfinals.

The sophomore from Cali, Colombia, pushed Bancarel into a second-set tiebreak but ultimately succumbed 6-2, 7-6 (2).

Gyorgy won a thrilling three setter over sixth-seeded Guadalupe Tocci of TAMUK 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, but the freshman for Hungary was eliminated by Zoric in the quarterfinals despite a strong start. Zoric advanced with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Gyorgy and Garcia, the No.-4 pairing in doubles, squeaked out an 8-7 (4) pro-set victory over the No. 7-seed from TAMUK, Maya Donkor and Lilly-Isabelle Muraske. in the quarterfinals and then summarily dismissed the top-seeded duo of Bancarel and Natalia Gorzny, 8-3, in the semifinals. 

With an automatic berth in the ITA Cup at stake, Gyorgy and Garcia meet eighth-seeded Gia Posito and Karol Alessia Terlizzi of St. Mary's in the final on Saturday at a time to be determined.

Posito and Terlizzi took out Jasmine Crain and Alessia Dolce of Midwestern State in the quarterfinals, 8-3.

Hattie Berend and Sepkin, the No. 5 seed, were eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Angelo State pairing of Sasa Felixova and Margaux Rene, 8-5.

Berend, who had the misfortune of playing the top-seeded Bancarel in the first round of singles, has seen plenty of action, advancing to the consolation semifinals. Berend defeated Alexandra Luders of Lubbock Christian and Hannah Nagpall of TAMUK in straight sets. Luders was ousted 6-3, 6-4 and Nagpall was overwhelmed, 6-1, 6-1.

Berend plays a consolation semifinal match on Saturday against Luisa Moraes of UT Tyler at 9 a.m.
