Mustangs fall to Lubbock Christian in LSC final

ARLINGTON, Texas -- No. 5-ranked Lubbock Christian held off Midwestern State, 4-3, in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament final Saturday afternoon at the Arlington Tennis Center.

The loss ended the Mustangs' brilliant run through the tournament which included a sweep of Cameron and a stunning 4-3 come-from-behind win over UT Tyler in a marathon semifinal which was delayed seven hours due to weather Friday.

MSU senior Stephen Slocombe and freshman Filip Vacula were named to the all-tournament team.

The Mustangs claimed an early advantage against LCU, taking the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3.

Juan David Duque and Killian Guillou opened with a 6-2 win over Lubbock Christian's Pablo Segura and Andres De Los Rios at No. 3 before Bruno Sanchez and Justin Van Amerongen rolled to a 6-3 victory over Mattia Ghedin and Marco Seccia at No. 2.

Duque, who delivered the clinching win against UT Tyler, put the Mustangs up 2-0 with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Jordan Georgiev at No. 6 singles, but the Chaps took the next three matches.

Seccia beat Van Amerongen 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 and Ghedin upended Slocombe 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 before Pablo Segura gave LCU a 3-2 advantage with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sanchez at No. 2.

Vacula, the No. 18 singles player in Division II, leveled the match with a highlight win over No. 9-ranked Kelly Giese 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1.

Then, LCU's Andres De Los Rios defeated Jose Marquez in the deciding match 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Lubbock Christian, which won its first LSC postseason tournament title, improved to 22-2, while the Mustangs dropped to 15-6.

MSU awaits selection for its 12th straight NCAA Division II postseason appearance. The field is set for release on Monday.
