BOULDER CITY, Nevada — Midwestern State closed the most successful season in program with a 12th-place finish in the NCAA Division II Championships Thursday afternoon at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Led by the hard working senior duo of
Brecklyn Flanagan and
Makenna Henry along with juniors
Kodi Nolen and
Alli Reily, sophomore
Madison Wert, and freshman
Mary Kerr, the Mustangs became the first golf team regardless of gender to win an NCAA Division II region title, then became the first women's squad to earn a national tournament berth.
The Mustangs entered the final round just one stroke out of eighth place, but would finish the tournament tied for 12th after marking team totals of 290, 295, and 290 for an 11-over, 54-hole total of 875.
Flanagan (70-74-70) carded her sixth and seventh par-or-better scores of the season during tournament while finishing tied for 21st with a 2-under total of 214. The Murphy, Texas, native carded a team-high 16 birdies and upped her career total of 210, the second most behind Juanita Gomez' total of 214.
Kerr tied for 49th after marking scores of 70, 77, and 73 for a 4-over total of 220, while Henry (74-73-74) tied for 53 with a 5-over tally of 221.
Reily tied for 64th place with scores of 76, 71, and 76 for a 7-over total of 223, while Wert tied for 86th marking scores of 70 and 78 before closing with an individual tournament low of 73 in the final round. Wert amassed a 15-over total of 231.
Dallas Baptist topped the team leader board during stroke play with an 18-under team tally of 846. The Patriots are joined in the medal match play bracket by California State, San Marcos (849/-15), Flagler (Fla.) (851/-13), Findlay (Ohio) (852/-12), Anderson (S.C.) (854/-10), West Texas A&M (857/-7), Central Missouri (862/-2), and Wingate (N.C.) (864/E).
The quarterfinal round of medal match play begins Friday morning followed by the semifinals in the afternoon. The national championship match is set for Saturday morning.
California State, San Marcos junior Madison Murr won the individual national championship with scores of 69, 64, and 69 for a 14-under total of 212, finishing three strokes better than Dallas Baptist freshman Gracie Grant (73-66-66).
