WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Mustangs host the Midwestern State Invitational this week at Wichita Falls Country Club. The 54-hole tournament tees off on Monday and concludes on Tuesday with a 16-team field.
No. 23-ranked Midwestern State finished ninth in a 14-team field at the DBU Classic in its most recent tournament. The Mustangs finished 66-over 930 at Dallas Athletic Club.
Mary Kerr finished in a four-way for 10th place at 6-over 222. Kerr opened with a 3-over 75 before shooting 2-over 74 in the second round. Kerr closed with her best round of the tournament at 1-over 73, and the junior from Friendswood, Texas, finished the tournament with 10 birdies over 54 holes.
The Mustangs were seventh in the 16-team field at last year's Midwestern State Invitational, shooting 19-over in the final round to finish 56-over 920, 48 strokes behind Dallas Baptist, which won the tournament, led by individual medalist Ella Cheek, who shot 8-under 208 to win by two strokes over Aaliyah Hryniewiecka-Irwin of McLennan Community College.
Kerr, competing as an individual, finished in a four-way tie for 25th place at 13-over 229, closing with a 6-over 78.
Kaetie Samuels, competing as an individual, finished in a seven-way tie for 31st place after shooting 4-over in her final round to finish at 16-over 232 for the tournament.
Romane Lacoste carded a 10-over 82 in the final round and finished in a four-way tie for 38th place at 17-over 233.
Madison Wert shot 4-over 76 in the final round and finished in a four-way tie for 48th place at 20-over 236.
The defending champions from Dallas Baptist are in the field once again this year and are joined by Western New Mexico, St. Mary's, Cameron, Texas A&M International, Lubbock Christian, West Texas A&M, UT Dallas and UT Permian Basin from the Lone Star Conference.
Central Oklahoma, Montana State-Billings, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Northeastern State, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and Texas A&M-Texarkanna round out the field. Texas Tech has two players competing as individuals.
Wichita Falls Country Club was the first course in North Texas to feature bent-grass greens, and D.A. Weibring designed the current layout in 2008. The course has tree-lined, Bermuda grass fairways.
The weather forecast is calling for ideal conditions. Monday should be sunny with a 5-10 mph south wind and a high of 74 degrees. Partly cloudy skies with a southerly wind and a high of 77 degrees are expected for the final round on Tuesday.
Next week, the Mustangs travel to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, for the Tulsa Cup, which is staged at The Club at Forest Ridge on Oct. 26 and 27.
