Mustangs set to host Falcons in home finale

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- – Midwestern State continues its 10-game homestand this week with doubleheaders against Sul Ross State and UT Permian Basin.

The Lobos make their first-ever appearance at Mustangs Park on Wednesday. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.

UT Permian Basin visits the Mustangs on Friday for a twin bill that gets underway at noon.

Midwestern State is 15-30 overall with a 12-24 record in the Lone Star Conference. The Mustangs are 10-12 at home this season.

Sydney Linn leads the MSU offense with a .385 batting average. The sophomore left fielder from Holliday, Texas, is 7-for-14 with seven RBIs and six runs scored over her last four games for the Mustangs.

Linn has hit a home run in each of her last two games, including a three-run homer with two outs in the seventh inning against Western New Mexico that forced extra innings on Sunday afternoon. All four of Linn's home runs this season have been hit at Mustangs Park. Linn has started in 41 games this season and has made 43 appearances.

Camile Nunez leads Midwestern State with eight home runs this season. Nunez has hit two home runs in a game twice this season. The senior shortstop from Madera, California, has 19 extra-base hits among her 47 hits this season. Nunez is batting .326 with a team-leading 84 total bases this season. Nunez leads the Mustangs with a .583 slugging percentage and has started all 43 games in which she has appeared.

Jessika Roberts is 9-for-14 (.643) through the first six games of the homestand and has hit six of her team-leading 12 doubles in that span. Roberts, an outfielder from Forney, Texas, was 5-for-6 with four doubles in the last four games for the Mustangs. Roberts is second on the squad with a .331 batting average and has started in 43 of 45 games this season. The senior is leading the team with 10 stolen bases and has appeared in all but one game this season.

Senior infielder Myranda Jimenez has reached base safely in 21 of her last 22 games for the Mustangs. Jimenez is hitting .327 with 17 RBIs and 18 runs scored this season. Jimenez has started the last 33 games and has played all four infield positions for the Mustangs.

Megan Ayala is tied with Nunez for the team lead in RBIs with 27 this season, and the junior from Denton, Texas, drove in five runs during a 12-3 victory at Sul Ross State earlier this season. Ayala hit a three-run homer in the first inning and delivered a two-run single in the fourth inning. Ayala scored three runs in the victory at Lobo Softball Field on March 15.

Ayala has hit four home runs this season, including a solo shot in the third inning of a 6-1 victory at UT Permian Basin on March 13, when Ayala had three RBIs for MSU. Ayala has been used primarily as a catcher and third baseman in her 41 starts this season.

Mikey Dominguez has started the last 15 games in center field and is hitting .310 in 25 appearances for the Mustangs. The senior from Rockport, Texas, had two hits in a 3-2 loss at No. 2-ranked West Texas A&M on April 3.

Addison Lindemann and Kayleigh Bowers have been stalwarts in the circle for Midwestern State this season.

Lindemann, a sophomore from Holliday, Texas, has hurled 110 1/3 innings with 19 starts and 26 appearances this season. Lindemann has a team-leading 78 strikeouts. The right-hander is 6-15 with a 6.04 ERA and has thrown eight complete games.

Lindemann threw six innings and allowed just three hits in a 2-1 loss at Sul Ross State on March 15. She worked seven innings and held UT Permian Basin to three hits in a 1-0 victory at UTPB Park on March 13.

Bowers has made 17 starts this season with six relief appearances and is 4-6 with a 6.33 ERA for the Mustangs. The sophomore from Phoenix, Arizona, has thrown 96 2/3 innings with five complete games. She is 4-6 with a 6.33 ERA and has recorded 48 strikeouts this year.

Bowers worked five innings and earned the win at Sul Ross State as the Mustangs pounded the Lobos in Alpine, Texas, earlier this season, 12-1. She allowed six hits and walked one while getting the Lobos to ground out eight times in the victory.

Bowers induced 12 ground ball outs in a seven-inning victory at UTPB, scattering seven hits and striking out three Falcons in a 6-1 triumph on March 13.

Midwestern State split a doubleheader with Sul Ross State last month in the first-ever meeting for the two schools. The Mustangs won the opener, 12-1, in five innings, but Sul Ross State pulled out a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.

Sul Ross State makes its first visit to Mustangs Park with a 10-35 overall record, and the Lobos are 7-29 in their inaugural Lone Star Conference campaign.

The Lobos have a six-game losing streak and are 1-17 on the road this season. Sul Ross State is in the midst of a 10-game road trip and is coming off a pair of losses at Lubbock Christian. The Lady Chaps won the opener on Sunday, 4-3, before scoring 10 runs in the first inning at Maner Park and posting a 16-1 victory in five innings to complete the sweep.

The Lobos are hitting .236 as a team, while their opponents are batting .388. Sul Ross is scoring 2.7 runs per game, and opponents are scoring more than eight runs a game.

Adriana Hernandez is the leading hitter for Sul Ross State with a .298 batting average, and she has hit two home runs this season. Hernandez leads the team with an on-base percentage of .360.

Tori Owens leads the Lobos with 18 RBIs and eight doubles this season. Owens is hitting .294 for Sul Ross State.

Ciera Avila has 15 RBIs and has scored 14 runs this season. Avila is hitting .256 and is tied for the team lead with two homers. She also has four doubles and a triple this season.

Alyvia Quintana has made a team-leading 21 appearances in the circle for Sul Ross State with 15 starts. Quintana is 5-12 with a 7.01 ERA, and she has thrown nine complete games. Leanza Chambers has started 16 games and is 2-15 with an ERA of 11.54. Chambers has thrown two complete games.

UT Permian Basin visits Midwestern State after playing a doubleheader at No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M.

Entering the week, the Falcons have been shut out in four consecutive games. Lubbock Christian won a pair of 8-0 games in five innings, while No. 7-ranked Angelo State won the first game of a doubleheader 7-0 before winning a five-inning affair, 8-0.

Midwestern State leads the all-time series with the Falcons, 22-7, and has won four of its last five meetings with UTPB.

Midwestern State is 10-3 when hosting the Falcons and swept a doubleheader in Odessa last month, winning the first game, 6-1, and pulling out a 1-0 victory in the nightcap.

UTPB makes its first visit since splitting a doubleheader with MSU at Mustangs Park in 2023. Midwestern State took the opener, 2-1, and the Falcons salvaged the split with a 7-1 victory.

UTPB is 8-38 overall this season and begins the week with a four-game losing streak. The Falcons are 3-33 against LSC opponents. and they are 1-21 on the road this season.

The Falcons are hitting .233 as a team, while their opponents boast a .331 batting average. UTPB is scoring 2.7 runs per game and allowing opponents to score 6.8 runs a game.

Kerri Sanford leads the UTPB offense with a .378 batting average and leads the team with .469 slugging percentage and 67 total bases. Sanford has two doubles, four triples and one home run for the Falcons. Sanford has an on-base percentage of .418 with 12 RBIs, and she is 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts.

Kaylee Moses has blasted a team-best three home runs and leads the Falcons with 19 RBIs this season. She also has three doubles and two triples. Moses is hitting .270 with a slugging percentage of .414.

Jessica Cantrell has pitched 135 innings for the Falcons and is 5-13 with a 3.94 ERA. Cantrell has pitched 11 complete games and has thrown one shutout this season. Cantrell was the winning pitcher in a 5-4 victory over Sul Ross State on April 6, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits through seven innings. The freshman for Elgin, Texas, threw her 11th complete game of the season.

Meghan Gattis has made 12 starts for the Falcons and worked four innings against the Mustangs in a 6-1 loss on March 13 at UTPB Softball Park. Gattis, who has also appeared 13 times in relief for UTPB, is 0-12 with a 7.83 ERA.

Midwestern State closes out the regular season next week with a four-game road trip. The Mustangs visit Angelo State for a doubleheader on April 25 before playing two games at Lubbock Christian on April 27.
