Mustangs visit Laredo to battle Dustdevils in doubleheader

LAREDO, Texas -- Midwestern State travels to South Texas this weekend for doubleheaders against Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The Mustangs are 6-15 overall with a 3-9 conference record. Midwestern State swept Texas Woman's in a doubleheader at home last week, and MSU is 5-7 at Mustangs Park, but the Stang Gang is still seeking its first road win of the season after suffering losses at Oklahoma Christian and Cameron.

Sophomore Sidney Linn is hitting .424 with three doubles and a home run for the Mustangs. Linn has a five-game hitting streak and has hit in 16 of 20 games to start the season. The left fielder has recently robbed home runs against Cameron and UT Tyler. She has committed one error with 18 chances defensively.

Senior Camile Nunez is slugging the softball this spring. The shortstop is hitting .377 with three home runs, two triples and five doubles among her 25 hits this season. Nunez has a team-leading OPS of 1.047. She also leads the team with 11 RBIs this season.

Senior Megan Ayala seems to have found a home at third base and since occupying the hot corner, the junior from Denton, Texas, has heated up at the plate. Ayala has hit safely in eight of her last nine games and is hitting .444 in that span. She has two doubles and a home run in her last five games. Ayala does not have an error in her last 27 chances.

Jessika Roberts has a six-game hitting streak with three doubles and a home run in that span. For the season, Roberts is hitting .278. The senior right fielder is fielding 1.000 with 22 chances and two assists for the Mustangs.

Addison Lindemann is a stalwart at the plate over the last six games. The sophomore is hitting .470 during a six-game hitting streak with a home run, double and three RBIs for the Mustangs.

Lindemann has thrown 45.2 innings in the circle for the Mustangs, and she is 3-6 with a 5.82 ERA over 12 appearances with eight starts for the Mustangs. Lindemann has a team-leading 34 strikeouts.

Kayleigh Bowers has also made eight starts for the Mustangs — and like Lindemann — she has thrown two complete games. Her record is 1-4 with a 5.03 ERA. Bowers has thrown 39 innings and recorded 21 strikeouts for MSU.

Texas A&M International is 12-11 overall with a 5-6 conference record and has won all four home games to start the season. The Dustdevils return home after dropping four games at Angelo State and Lubbock Christian on a recent road trip.

Zakayia Fredrick, Kylie Goad and Nevaeh Herrera all have three wins in the circle for the Dustdevils, who have a team ERA of 3.94. Opponents are hitting .294 against TAMIU pitching this season.

Victoria Gonzalez stokes the offense with four home runs and 15 RBIs. Victoria Espinoza has blasted three homers for the Dustdevils. Jenna Fabela is hitting .420 through 22 games and has 10 RBIs. Kennedy Griego has eight RBIs and is hitting .392 with a team-leading 33 total bases for TAMIU.

Texas A&M-Kingsville is hosting No. 7-ranked West Texas A&M before facing the Mustangs on Sunday afternoon. The Javelinas enter the week with a 13-10 overall record, and they are 8-4 in conference play. TAMUK has won its first four home games of the season.

Last Sunday, the Javelinas swept a doubleheader against No. 22-ranked Lubbock Christian, winning the opener, 9-1, in five innings as Arianna Alaniz threw a no-hitter. TAMUK posted a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.

Kaylynne Ruiz was 5-for-6 with two home runs and five RBIs in the doubleheader.

Lindsey Evans is the leading hitter for the Javelinas with a .522 batting average. She has seven doubles, two triples, five home runs and 19 RBIs in 23 games. Alexis Solis is hitting .406 and leads the team with nine doubles. Solis also has 19 RBIs. AJ Jasso leads the team with 21 RBIs and is hitting .353 for the Javelinas.

Alaniz is 5-3 in the circle with a 2.60 ERA and has struck out 75 batters in 40 1/3 innings. Opponents are hitting .154 against Alaniz, who has thrown four complete games.

Midwestern State is still on the road next week with doubleheaders at UT Permian Basin and Sul Ross State. The Mustangs return home on March 21 to play Lubbock Christian at 2 p.m.
