SILVER CITY, NM -- Midwestern State held Western New Mexico to just 11.8 percent from beyond the arc in a 2-for-17 shooting performance on the way to a 68-46 victory at Drag's Court on Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs (17-5, 12-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Will Shepherd, who had 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Mason Gibson tacked on 15 points and Jonathan Jackson chipped in with 11 points and two steals.
Midwestern State did an excellent job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 18 assists while turning the ball over just five times. Individually, Pierre Sanders finished with five assists.
The Midwestern State defense held Western New Mexico shooters to just 27.3 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 10-9 advantage, Midwestern State went on a 7-0 run with 10:55 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Antwan Taylor, to increase its lead to 17-9. The Mustangs then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 27-24 advantage. Midwestern State scored 16 of its 27 points in the paint.
Midwestern State started tacking on points in the second half almost immediately, going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Jackson's three, to grow the lead to 38-24 with 16:43 to go in the contest. The Mustangs kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 68-46 win.
