TYLER, Texas -- No. 4-ranked Midwestern State follows up its finals' appearance at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with dual matches against three ranked opponents at the UT Tyler Invitational.
The Mustangs face No. 9 Auburn-Montgomery on Friday at 1 p.m. The second dual match is Saturday at 11 a.m. against No. 25-ranked West Florida. On Sunday, MSU meets No. 12 West Alabama at 1 p.m.
Midwestern State is 6-1 to start the season and has scored wins over three nationally ranked opponents, including a 4-0 sweep of No. 6-ranked North Georgia in the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship after pulling out a 4-3 win over Lynn in the first round at Indianapolis.
The Mustangs only loss came against No. 1-ranked Barry in the finals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
No. 6-ranked
Jessica Binzari has opened the season with a 4-1 record. The senior from Romania took a set from No. 1-ranked Alina Michalitsch of Berry and No. 4-ranked Angelina Linnikova of North Georgia in matches that were unfinished at the ITA National Indoor Team Championships. Binzari also posted a victory over No. 20-ranked Salma Djoubri of Lynn.
The Mustangs are 22-11 in singles matches this season. Senior
Anda Ghinga is 5-1 with all six of her matches at No. 4 doubles. Freshman
Camila Garcia of Colombia has started her collegiate career with a 4-1 record, playing all five matches at No. 5 singles.
Midwestern State is 4-2 at No. 2 singles with Binzari and
Hannah Yip each getting two wins in that position.
Yip is coming off a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ashley Moinard of North Georgia.
The Mustangs are 13-4 in doubles matches, led by Binzari and Ghinga, who are 5-0 at No. 2 doubles. Midwestern State is 5-2 at No. 3 doubles with
Sydney Williams and
Sarah Mazaraki posting a 4-1 record in that position.
Yip and Garcia are 2-2 at No. 1 doubles but three of their last four matches have been unfinished.
Midwestern State seeks to avenge its 4-3 loss to Auburn-Montgomery in Tyler last year.
Auburn-Montgomery is 2-1 to start the season, losing to North Georgia, 6-1. The Warhawks opened the season with a 4-3 win over No. 9-ranked Columbus State and is coming off a 7-0 win over Tuskegee.
Estefania Garcia was instrumental in the Warhawks victory last season and has started out 2-1 at No. 1 singles this season. She is also 2-1 at No. 1 doubles playing alongside Ane Ibarra.
The Mustangs are 0-6 in the all-time series with West Florida, and the Argonauts pulled out a 4-2 victory in Tyler last year. Binzari and Ghinga earned straight-set victories for the Mustangs in singles last year.
West Florida has opened this season with a 4-1 record, led by Sandra Recuenco, who is 4-0 with two wins at No. 1 singles and two wins at No. 2 singles.
Guadalupe Martinez has a four-match winning streak in singles and is 4-1 to start the season as the Argonauts are 20-10 in singles matches. The team's record in doubles is 9-5, posting a 4-1 record in the No. 3 position.
Following a 6-1 loss at South Alabama, the Argonauts have reeled of four consecutive dual-match victories, including a 5-2 win over No. 18-ranked Southern Arkansas in Memphis, Tennessee.
Midwestern State won its first-ever meeting with West Alabama last year, 4-2, at the UT Tyler Invitational.
The Tigers are 2-1, led by Shaira Rivera and Valentina Mutilba, who have both started the season with 3-0 records at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively. West Alabama is also undefeated at No. 3 singles, but 0-3 at No. 6 singles.
West Alabama is 6-3 in doubles with 2-1 records at all three positions. Rivera and Mutilba are 2-1 at No. 1 doubles for the Tigers.
Midwestern State hosts Northwest Missouri State for the home-opening dual match on March 7 at MSU Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
