Mustangs win seventh straight, take out TAMIU 85-72

LAREDO, Texas -- Midwestern State's Mason Gibson needed just 10 field goal attempts to pour in a team-high 21 points as the Mustangs rolled to a 85-72 win over Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon at the Kinesiology and Convocation Building.

MSU improved to 21-5 on the season, while maintaining a tie for third place in the Lone Star Conference standings at 16-4.

The Mustangs extended their winning streak seven consecutive game and have won 10 of the last 11. It is the longest winning streak since MSU won eight-straight games heading into the 2016 NCAA Division II South Central Regional.

Gibson delivered his third consecutive 20-point effort, while making 7-of-10 shots from the field including a pair of 3-pointers and went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. The Allen, Texas, native also dished out four assists.

During the three-game run, Gibson averaged 24 points, while shooting 71.4-percent from the field and is 9-of-12 from 3-point range. The 6-foot guard is also 23-of-29 from the charity stripe.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 20-point lead when Pierre Sanders camped a second-half opening, 8-0 run with a layup to give MSU a 52-32 lead with 18:25 to play.

But Texas A&M International connected on eight triples over the next eight minutes, including five by junior Myles Tucker to ignite an extended 28-10 run. After Tucker buried his fifth 3-pointer of the run with 10:23 to go, the Dustdevils were back within a buckert at 62-60.

Tucker, who came averaging 3.2 points per game, finished with a game-high 22 points.

But the Mustangs responded with a 10-0 run of their own and extended the lead back out to 16 down the stretch.

Sanders contributed an all-around line with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Senior Jonathan Jackson connected on four 3-pointers for 12 points, while Reggie Hill and Matija Svetozarevic chipped in 10 points each.

Midwestern State welcomes Lubbock Christian in its home finale Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
