Men's Basketball Falls In Defensive Contest With Pittsburg State, 66-55

The Mustangs held the Gorillas 36.0% from the field, but PSU went 16-22 from the foul line to get past MSU.

SAN ANTONIO — Midwestern St. (4-6, 2-1 Lone Star) fell to Pittsburg St. (8-4, 2-0 Mid-America Intercollegiate) 66-55 in a neutral site matchup at Bill Greehey Arena on Wednesday night.

Midwestern St. struggled with turnovers, committing 15, while Pittsburg St. capitalized with 17 points off those turnovers.

Pittsburg State started strong with Mason English scoring a layup just 24 seconds into the game, setting the tone for a competitive first half. The Mustangs struggled with turnovers, committing nine, which allowed Pittsburg State to capitalize and maintain an edge. Alijah Curry contributed significantly for the visitors, scoring multiple times in the paint and converting a three-point play at the 9:01 mark. Despite a late surge from MSU, with Charles McClennahan, Jr. hitting a 3-pointer and Kadon Jackson adding a layup, Pittsburg State held a 30-24 lead at halftime.

Pittsburg State maintained their lead over the Maroon & Gold in the second half, outscoring them 36-31. Connor Rogers was instrumental for Pittsburg State, making three consecutive 3-pointers, including one at the 10:10 mark that extended their lead to 51-33. MSU's Jonathan Jackson responded with a series of 3-pointers, narrowing the gap slightly, but Pittsburg State's consistent scoring kept them ahead. The half concluded with a jumper from Davyon Butler, followed by a 3-pointer from J.Jackson with nine seconds remaining, but Pittsburg State held on for the win.

J.Jackson finished with 10 points, converting three 3-pointers on five attempts. Butler added eight points and recorded two steals, contributing defensively. Charles Fofanah scored five points and matched Butler with two steals. McClennahan posted nine points and collected six rebounds, leading the team in board work.

In their next game, the Mustangs will travel to face St. Mary's on Friday, Jan. 2. The game will tip off at 7:30 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas.
