DALLAS – Midwestern State closes out the regular season by visiting No. 1-ranked Dallas Baptist. MSU has clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament. The Mustangs are the final obstacle for DBU, which can complete a perfect regular season with a victory.
Midwestern State (9-1-6, 9-0-4) extended its unbeaten streak to 14 games with a 5-0 victory at Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon.
Lillia Besedin scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season, while
Leeci Snyder added her third and fourth assists of the season in the onslaught.
Madison Brinkley notched her third goal of the season, assisted by
Allessandra Romano, and
Jimena Rodriguez tallied her second goal of the season to cap the scoring in the 77th minute.
Goalkeepers
Lauren Short and
Tanner Sorenson combined on the Mustangs' sixth shutout of the season with Sorenson making the only save of the match in the second half.
Sorenson is 5-0-4 with a 0.99 goals-against average, and Short is 4-1-2 with a 1.02 GAA.
Besedin and
Marlene Myrvold lead the team in points with 14 apiece. Myrvold has six goals and two assists for the Mustangs.
Nyxalee Munoz has five goals and an assist while leading the team with 61 shots, including a team-leading 19 shots on goal.
Midwestern State is outscoring its opponents, 37-16, and is averaging nearly 11 shots per game more than its opponents.
Midwestern State is 7-9 in its all-time series with Dallas Baptist, but the Mustangs have lost their last nine meetings with the Patriots, including a 5-0 loss at Patriot Soccer Field last season. DBU scored three goals in the opening 26 minutes.
Dallas Baptist (16-0-0, 12-0-0) has outscored opponents 62-3 this season and has not allowed a goal in 529 minutes, and UT Dallas is the only conference foe that has managed to score against the Patriots.
McKenna Vela and Anne Louthan have both scored 10 goals this season, while Angelina Olmos leads DBU with 11 assists. Vela has 27 points and Louthan has 26. Olmos and Chandler Wheat each have 19 points. Wheat has seven goals and five assists.
The Patriots are coming off a 5-0 win over West Texas A&M and boast a 9-0-0 record at home this season. DBU is 6-3-0 when hosting Midwestern State, which has lost its last six visits to Patriot Soccer Field. Since 2019, MSU has been outscored by the Patriots in Dallas, 18-4.
Midwestern State is hosting a Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament quarterfinal match at Stang Park on Monday night at 7 p.m.
