ALAMOSA, Colorado – Midwestern State is on the road to face two more opponents from the RMAC. The Mustangs meet Adams State at Plachy Hall on Thursday night at 7 p.m. CST before visiting Western Colorado at Paul Wright Gym in Gunnison on Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST.
Midwestern State (1-1) opened the season at home and split its first two games against RMAC opponents. The Mustangs scored a season-opening 97-90 over UCCS before CSU Pueblo defeated MSU at D.L. Ligon Coliseum, 72-60.
Orlando Horton Jr. missed the first game but scored 22 points against the Thunderwolves and also dished out three assists on Saturday afternoon.
Jonathan Jackson, who was 9-of-12 from 3-point range in the season opener and scored 31 points, is averaging 19 points per game for the Mustangs. He also leads the Stangs with seven steals through two games.
Terrance Ramirez is averaging 14 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for the Mustangs.
DaCannon Wesley leads the team with eight rebounds per game and also has eight blocks for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State is 6-0 all-time against Adams State, including a 119-114 double-overtime victory last season.
The Mustangs have not visited the Grizzlies since a 95-87 victory in 2015, and MSU is 2-0 all-time when visiting Adams State, including a 97-93 victory in 1974.
Adams State (2-1) is coming off a 99-86 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday night. The Grizzlies split a pair of games against LSC opponents to start the season. Adams State defeated UT Permian Basin on opening day in Odessa, Texas, 81-69, and lost to Angelo State at Junell Center the following day, 68-61, in San Angelo.
Wyatt Helming, a 6-7 senior forward, is the leading scorer for Adams State with 19.7 points per game, while Luke Williams and Jayce King are each scoring 11.7 points per game for the Grizzlies. Adams State is outscoring its opponents on average 80-75 and is shooting 47.4 percent from the field. The Grizzlies are hitting 36.8 percent of their 3-point shots.
Helming is also the leading rebounder with 10.3 boards per game, and he has a team-leading five blocks through three games.
Jerrick Guidry is leading the team with 11 assists. Williams has five steals for the Grizzlies, who are only hitting 59.5 percent of their free throws.
Western Colorado plays Cameron on Thursday night before the Mustangs visit for the second time in program history. Midwestern State leads the all-time series, 4-0, and defeated the Mountaineers at Paul Wright Gym in 2017, 123-121 in double-overtime.
Western Colorado lost at Midwestern State last season, 81-67, as the Mustangs shot 53.3 percent, including 9-of-15 from 3-point range.
Jonathan Jackson was 3-of-5 from long distance and scored nine points in the victory.
Antwan Taylor had five rebounds in the victory.
Sophomore Aiden McDowell scored 37 points against Angelo State and followed that up with a 27-point performance against UTPB. The 6-4 guard from Crete, Nebraska, has hit 22-of-36 shots, including 9-of-17 from 3-point range. He has hit all 13 of his free throws to start the season.
Junior Tyler Halligan is the leading rebounder for the Mountaineers with six boards per game. Mason Mottashed, a junior guard, leads the team with nine assists through two games.
Midwestern State returns home on Monday to play Dallas Christian at 7:30 p.m.
